Recommend Your RE in Pittsburgh Area

Sorry to just jump in here! I'm actually not from the area at all, but I'm going to be in town over the holidays and I'm hoping to find an RE who I can work with for IUI cycle monitoring and possible IUI in December. Timing is everything and I'm worried it won't be on my side. I need to get on this now and find someone!  I would appreciate any recommendations!

You probably want to check which RE's accept your insurance first. Dr. Wakim (Magee) is who we used after switching from RHS.

I really like Reproductive Health Specialists in Penn Hills.  They are very flexible and have worked with my schedule.  I have been with them almost a year now.

I absolutely love Dr. Tippett and his staff at the Center for Fertility in Wexford.

I had Dr. Sanfilippo in the Center for Fertility and Reproductive Endocrinology at Magee (same group as Dr. Wakim). I loved the group and Dr. Sanfilippo.

DH and I had a string of very bad experiences at Magee's RE office when we went through our first round of diagnostics in 2006.  We had Dr. Sanfillipo and had no problem with him, but the nursing staff was distant, sometimes impatient, and on two occasions neglected to give me the necessary information I needed to schedule a the appropriate follow-up appt. On one of those occasions a nurse actually angrily lectured me about calling the correct phone number for particular scheduling - a number which I had never been given and a procedure that I had never been instructed to schedule.  That incident drew out into two menstrual cycles what should have been a one cycle diagnostic work up.  Even if that had not happened, my overall experience there was negative - I felt we were like a medical diagnosis rather than people.

When we decided we were ready to undergo treatment (we needed IVF w/ ICSI due to male-factor infertility), we avoided Magee like the plague and scheduled consults with the physician at West Penn and with Dr. Erb at RHS.  I was delighted with the nursing staff at West Penn, but the physician gave us a canned talk that started with "What brings you here?" (I was thinking of giving him two guesses) and at some point came around to "To make a baby you need a sperm and an egg."  He was nice enough, but again, didn't talk to us as if we were reasonable, intelligent people.  I was prepared to go with him at that point, however, because the whole experience was much better than my time at Magee.

Somehow, we ended up visiting RHS last, but I am so glad we made it there. The nursing staff was wonderful and I felt so supported and was able to call in a few times when needed.  Dr. Erb was kind and empathic.  We went through two rounds of IVF, the first ended in miscarriage.  The whole staff was so caring through that time.  The second round resulted in our current pregnancy (24 weeks w/ twins) and when I ended up at the Magee ER with ovarian cyst pain in week two, multiple physicians at RHS followed up with me over the course of five days.  Each of them was kind, reassuring when needed, and very thoughtful in their recommendations to us.  I am very grateful that if we had to go through this process, we got to go through it with a medical team that I know was really invested in us and in supporting our family.

I'm so sorry you had that experience with Magee. I can say, having just been released from their care in September, that I think they must have new nursing staff. Everyone was so nice and helpful. They always called me with all my test results (normal or not) and followed up with tons of information. I never felt like I was being slighted or talked down to. I had to have an HSG, along with a ton of other tests, and the doctor that did it was so caring and explained everything to me. I can say my experience was terrific.
