NBR -Does the big outside box part of your HVAC turn on w/ heat?

It's our first winter in the house and we're a little confused.  The big box thing outside (I think it might be called a heat pump?) keeps turning on and off and DH thinks it should only do that when it's cooling, but he's the opposite of handy.  Is yours turning on and off right now or should I call the HVAC guy?

  • hmmmmm.

Our AC unit is outside, the heat pump is actually inside - upstairs in a closet door.

The heat pump does go on whent he heat is on, the AC unit that is outside does not.

Are you sure what you are looking at outside is actually the heat pump?

This.  Furnace in attic kicks on but AC unit outside does not.  We had a problem last year where wires were crossed and both AC and heat were kicking on at the same time.  Hope that doesn't scare you, but its possible.

  • I have no idea what I'm talking about.  There's a big thing upstairs in the utility closet where I have to change the filter, so I guess that's the heat pump.  It cycles on and off at appropriate times.

The big thing outside also cycles on and off, seemingly at random.  Sounds like I do have to call the AC people for the 3rd time this year...

    Thanks for the responses!
