Working Moms

Are they bound to get sick????

I am going back to work in a few weeks after a 1 year maternity leave. My older dd was in in-home care (6 kids) when I worked before, and got sick 3 times in the year she was there. Now I will have both of them in a centre- 48 kids there... And of course I am heading back just as cold & flu season is getting started. My older dd has been going PT for the last month and has given us all pink eye already.

What am I in for??

A friend of mine is pulling her kid because he's always sick and is getting a live in nanny....

Re: Are they bound to get sick????

  • It depends on the kid and what they've been exposed too.  I think it also depends on the cleanliness of the center

My dd's first winter at daycare was rough (she was 5 months when she started).  She was sick a lot (mostly ear infections) and minor colds. My DC provider was very anal about everything being very clean.

Since then we've really had no problems.... just a few minor things a year.  I think this season I'm going to give her a vitamin too.

  • I'm crossing my fingers and knocking on wood- this time last year I had already had to take about 5 sick days for the fall! Now we're in a center, which seems clean. They even have a rule that we all wash hands as soon as we get in each morning, and they're great about washing the kids' hands once they're in from playing outside. So far so good. . .Hopefully the flu shot will help out as well.

  • Yup, it's pretty much inevitable that they'll get sick.  It's the normal reaction to being exposed to lots of new germs.

It will either happen now at daycare or later when they start school.  But it will happen eventually.

DS had constant ear infections/congestion last winter.  I'm hoping this winter will be easier, but I'm still expecting a few colds.

  • My poor 5 mos old has been sick all but 7 days since he began daycare on October 1st.  I know that people tell me he is " building his immune system", but he can't breathe and is up all night coughing and crying and I have to hold him so he can get any sleep ( or he is in his swing ).  I didn't mean to sound negative...but I feel like there has got to be a better way.  I am trying to research in home daycare or someone to come to my house.  It's hard b/c I don't know anyone and I am trying to find a person I feel I can trust.  I just think he could be a bit older before he is so very sick.
  • Kids get sick and honestly, if they are not exposed to the germs in daycare, they will get them at play groups, the park whereever and what I think is way worse - when they start kindergarten.  I would rather my kids get sick now and miss daycare than miss school once they start.  My older DD really has not gotten sick that often, she has only missed a few days total since she started at 12 weeks, she is 2 1/2 now.  Yes, she has had colds but you can go to daycare with a cold.  My 8 month old has gotten sick more often but she also has reflux and I have heard that babies with bad reflux just get more colds and stuff.  She missed 1-2 days since she started at 8 months.

  • I agree w/ the previous posters - I think it depends on your child and the center they are in.  my center is great about hand washing and parents wash hands upon entering the center...  that being said, my kids have been night and day different - my DD was hardly sick at all and my DS seems to get a cold every other week.  My DD doesn't usually get sick even when my son brings home his colds.

I guess I'd rather get their immune system built up while they are in daycare, rather than when they are in school and would be harder to miss classwork.
