I remembered last night something that really helped with DS. It sounds like you're reading a lot so you may already do this, but I wanted to pass it along, just in case.
We had a night light in DS's room, and a small push button light over the changing table, so that if we went in during the night we never had to turn the light on. As he got older we also used the next size up diaper so we didn't have to change him throughout the night since changing woke him up more.
We also made sure to keep eye contact to a minimum and not really talk to him or greet him when we came in the room, and as hard as this is, we rarely smiled or laughed (even if he was doing something super cute) because as soon as we interacted with him he'd wake right up and want to play, or cry when it was time to go back to sleep. We would be super quiet and just use "shhhhh" or maybe a softly sung (almost whispered) song to settle him down, while rocking (or bouncing on a yoga ball).
I think that really helped keep wakeups brief and combining that with not feeding him each time eventually taught him that he didn't get much out of waking up so it wasn't worth doing so often
GL!
Re: **mcatmay** - one more idea
Umdbride, thank you. I'm already doing the nightlight and definitely trying hard not to interact with her (and yes, it IS hard not to smile when she grinning at her mama wildly ;-)
I've toyed with trying the next size up diaper but haven't done it because i'm afraid she'll leak through. Did you ever have that problem? She's a peanut (12lb 8oz as of yesterday) and still in size 1 diapers but *maybe* ready to transition to size 2? (size 1s still seems to fit fine on her).
Thank you for the advice!!!
We did have leaks, especially with regular huggies (and they would actually leak some jelly-like stuff) so we stopped using them altogether. We use the Costo diapers (kirkland) and their first size is 1-2 and I think we switched right around 12 lbs actually. We use pampers overnight, there's ones that say "baby dry" on the box and have a small moon, I'm not sure how small they start but right now DS is in size 3 diapers from cotsco, and size 4 pampers overnight. So far, no leaks!
You could also change her when you go in to feed her, rather than changing her at every wake up. At least for DS, if he was fed he'd go right back to sleep. Oh, and sometimes I'd nurse on one side to settle him down, then change him, and then nurse the other side to get him back to sleep.
*Butting in* I'd go ahead and try the next size up. After all, if they are too big right now, you will use them eventually. I actually completely ignore the weights on diapers and just go with what works. My 18 lb 13 month old has been in size 4 since she was about 7 months old. :-) I
I did this with DS from the get go... Its definitely not that I don't love the child but I'd be half asleep nursing him on the bed anyway, then I'd go out to the rocker and keep him upright for 30 minutes on my shoulder or in a sitting position and just rock. Occassionally I'd just glance down to see if his eyes were closed and he'd look up at me but then I'd go back to closing my eyes and rocking.
