Clicky re: taking coats and carseats

Are you 'in compliance' with the coat/carseat rules?   (no coats in carseats except it would seem a thin fleece or something).

How about your friends?

  • Ditto Zenya.

Hell, seems like half the kids DS age that I see are in backless boosters already.

  • It was harder to "comply" when they were little....but now, my kids just aren't 'comfortable' with a big bulky coat (and neither am I)

We park in the garage, so its not TOO freezing in the car.  So its not biggie to just leave coats off until we arrive somewhere (and then remove again when we get back in the car to come home)

  • Baby does not wear a coat.

DS1 sometimes wears a coat, but he uses a seatbelt. Should you not do this even with a seatbelt?

We haven't had too many cold, cold days yet, so it really hasn't been an issue. He hates his winter coat with a passion and it's hard to get him to wear anything but a sweatshirt.

ditto. I also know nobody who RF until 2 IRL. I get looked at like the crazy lady at daycare for having a coatless 2.5 year old RF!

My cousin turned her DD around to FF at 10 months. I could not believe it.

    Same here.

  • I live in MN and its cold even with my car in the garage most of the time.  The girls do not wear super thick/fluffy coats and the straps on my younger DD's seat are tight (I check them every single time to make sure they are tight - older DD is in a booster seat).  I have always worn my coat and would not expect my kids to not wear there's.  The only time we don't have coats on is when we are doing a long distance drive like - think over 3 hours.  As infants, I had the special coat that was made to be worn in the infant seat so it had the hole for the straps built in.  I don't know anyone in real life that takes their coats off when they are getting into the car - this is MN - its a long and cold winter and even with the heat on, it takes a while for the car to really get warm.  My kids are safe and the straps are tight.

  • We don't do coats in the carseat, although it's a PITA since we often have to walk a few blocks to the car and can't exactly prewarm it. But I've tested to see and you have to majorly loosen the straps to fit them, so not safe at all. As far as using it the a booster in seatbelt mode, you still aren't supposed to. Technically it's unsafe for an adult to wear a heavy coat in the car too. I have always taken mine off  because I find it uncomfortable to wear anyway. Loading us in and out of the car takes forever...

Ditto this, but I live in MI.  When they were little they wore thick fleece coats in the car seat b/c they would not have been able to move with thick, puffy coats on.  they still don't really wear thick, puffy coats for that reason.  But, they definitely wear winter coats in the car.

Ditto this - except we are in ND.  We talked about it recently in my Moms Club.

ditto.  We are in Ontario.  You are far, far, far more likely to be stuck in your car for hours/overnight due to breakdown or because of road conditions than to be in an accident that would eject the child out of a buckled seat.  Already this year there have been a couple of very bad days of driving where people have gone into the ditch and waited for hours to get pulled out.

  • If they really need their coats on in the car, you can buckle the kid w/o the coat and then put the coat on backwards over the buckle.  My kids used to think that was hilarious (now they just think I'm weird to suggest it).  :)

Yes, exactly. I don't know a single other person IRL who follows guidelines for when to turn forward facing, when to switch to a booster, taking off coats, etc. Well, except for my sisters. I've drilled it into them, LOL.

  • They only wear bulky coats to play outside.  The both have fleece for everyday.  Both kids run warm, I would be freezing it what they wear.  They usually ask for their fleeces off after the car is warm.
  • My children wear coats, but we do not buy bulky coats because of the carseats.

We get thinsulate coats, which is probably still not exactly under the guidelines, but I'm comfortable with it. I would not be comfortable with bulky coats.

I have a friend that turned her DD to FF at 3-4 months old. Another friend turned her DD around at 9-10 months. I tried really hard not to judge but I was really worried about the babies.

And about the coat thing- DD absolutely *hates* wearing her coat, so she never wears her coat in the car. I never knew about this little rule, so I feel a bit better about it now.

  • If they wear coats, they are unzipped and we don't loosen the straps. IRL I am the only I know who does this.

That doesn't make sense to me.  Nobody is saying that it's unsafe to have a bulky coat *in the car at all*.  Just in the carseat.  Obviously we have our coats in the car so if we broke down we could put them on.

More than anything though I just think it's uncomfortable to wear a big coat in the car.  I always take mine off.  I don't care what other people do though.

  • I bought DD a really thin, WARM coat (it's not fleece, it is the same material as the "puffy coats" but it's just not puffy if that makes sense).  We live in MI and it gets SOOO cold here...she HAS to wear a coat from door to car, and then it's just not feasible to stand there, struggle to get her out of her coat, buckle her in, all while freezing my arse off.  And then when we arrive at our destination, have to struggle to get her all bundled up again just to get out of the car.

Now, once my garage is cleaned out and the door opener is fixed, we'll be parking in the garage so I am more likely to just keep her coat in the car for when we arrive at our destinations.

If you are in an accident, unconscious or injured and cannot reach the coat, it is an issue.  Like I said, that scenario plays out every.single.winter here.  Last week alone we were hit with freezing rain followed by nearly 12" of snow.  Dozens and dozens of vehicles off the road.  Several injuries.  Some vehicles took hours to be winched out, etc.  If you are considering the odds, then having the coat on is a safer bet that having it off.

This...we don't let my son wear a coat in the carseat, but my mother and MIL thinks we are crazy!  Oh well...I rest well at night knowing my son is safer in his carseat w/o it.  A blanket overtop him works wonders and starting the car before we leave the house.

PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...
