Hand Foot Mouth

So I have been praying for health in my home...here is a run down of the the mast 3 weeks. DS had vomitting and diarrhea bug, got well for one day then got pink eye in both eyes and an ear infection. Got over that a couple of days letter ended up with hand foot mouth disease. He started to get the rash friday night and nurse line said it was most likely Amoxacillin rash(I was hoping) Saturday woke up and he had blisters along with the rash all over his legs. Went to ER and yep he's got something much worse. How long does this stuff usually last? Did you put any kind of ointment on the blisters? His diaper area is really bad and butt paste isn't helping. I think those have become painful beacuse diaper changing is not fun...do you recommend any other diaper rash ointments? It has been really hard to get people to understand at work which makes it even more stressful. Has anyone had their LO come up with this? Thank you for listening I am one stressed momma right now.

Re: Hand Foot Mouth

  • DS had this last year (I think that's when - it was a while ago!). For us, the rash lasted a week maybe? It did take many many months for the evidence of the blisters to fade from his legs. He had lots of spots for a long time!

We just used regular diaper cream and changed him often, but I don't remember doing anything special. It's tough, and in our case, it looked a lot worse than it actually was. DS's rash was awful, but it didn't seem to bother him all that much.

Hope it runs it's course quickly!

  • DS got that last year too. DH even got it from him!

I never had any creams that worked. It pretty much has to run it's course. Just change him often and try to get him to eat and as long as the there aren't sores in his mouth he should still have a small appetite. The fever won't last very long and it'll look much worse than it is in a few days. Children don't suffer as much as adults do when they get it. The spots will get worse but they do reach their peak about 3 days in and will start to get better.

Good luck and I hope your LO gets better soon.

  • DS had this about 6 weeks ago. Dr said it was the worst case she's seen. He has bad excema so she thinks that's why he had such a bad reaction. She recommended using his prescription cortisone cream. We also lathered him up with vanicream (heavy duty lotion) at every diaper change & coated him in aquaphor. We gave him benadryl & Motrin as well to help him feel more comfortable for bed and nap time. It was miserable, but he improved after about a week. He still has red areas where the rash was bad & his skin peeled a few weeks after.

  • yes, both my ~4 yo and ~ 2yo had HFM when they were ea. 18 mos old. They were both Miserable!! the blisters were worse for them in their mouth and they both would not eat or sleep for several days. my youngest even self-weaned (from BFing) at the time. like others said, it did last about week. my youngest had spots on his bottom too, I also changed his diaper freq, etc, but the bumps ran their course. sorry your little guy is going through it, no fun at all!!
  • A got hand foot mouth around 9ish months.  It was no fun at all.  I think she had the blisters for about a week.  You could still see the spots for much longer but they weren't open blisters.  We tried to keep them covered so she wouldn't mess with them.  A had them all over her body but not really bad around her genitals so I'm no help there.  The worse part for A was her throat hurt really bad and she didn't really want to eat.  I think our pedi had us give her a little maalox to coat and soother her throat.  I would confirm with your pedi first but I'm pretty sure thats what it is.  I remember another mom mentioned something about magic mouthwash that sooths the throat but our pedi didn't give that as an option.  We pretty much kept her on tylenol/motrin to easy the pain.  It was no fun at all.  Just a warning that adults can get it to.  My DH got it shortly after.
