Re: After you gave birth

  • It took them almost 7 hours to bring her back. With every hour that went by, I got more and more ticked off. They knew I wanted to BF, I can't believe she went that long without eating?

Just wondering how long is the 'norm'

  • I had a c-section, so after they sewed me up. Maybe 30minutes?

  • Oh man, maybe 15 or 20 minutes? They were getting the placenta out. She was maybe two feet away from me though, and I could see her a little beyond my tears. lol. They had a NICU team waiting just in case.

  • They didn't take LO while you took a shower, got something to eat, etc?

With us - I had her, they wiped her down and I held her, they sewed me up, and we moved to the recovery room. Once we got settled in, they took her to give her her first bath, shots, blood work, whatever while I took a shower and had lunch.

  • No, she only left me once, and that was on day 2 when I had not slept. The nurses insisted I let her go to the nurshery for the night so I could sleep. I made them take me down to the nurshery and meet the nurse. She had no other babies so I finally consented. I think I slept 3 hours, got up and went in the hall to get my nurse to go get her. lol. I was in mom mode.

Other than that, she slept in the little craddle by my bed.  The nurse came in the room to give her a bath, etcc. I didnt have a recovery room, I stayed in the same room since we had arrived.

  • 7 hours..is that normal? I would have been flipping my shiz!! They did shots and all that jazz right in the room.

  • Its settled- You are having your LO at my hospital. Pack your shiz. You're moving.

  • They didn't do anything in the room. They do the first bath in the nursery so they can put baby under the heat lamps afterwards. I could come to the nursery and watch them do the shots, weight checks, whatever, but I had no desire to watch them stab my baby. Plus, I was still waiting for the epidural to wear off. I couldn't even go to the bathroom on my own for quite some time much less walk to the nursery.

exactly this. She didn't leave me one time. 7 hours seems like a really long time!

  • 7 Hours! I would have flipped my sh!t. Both kids stayed in the room a couple feet away, while they weighed, measured, & did Apgars as they delivered the placenta. I carried them while they wheeled me over to postpartum and then they were in the nursery for maybe 20 minutes getting their shots. We did the first bath in my room, and they never left my room until the day we went home and had to get a full assessment by the pediatrician. I love every minute of those first couple days having an outside baby, finally!

I was about to flip my ***. The only thing that kept me sane was that playoff football was on, so I watched an entire game and that kept me distracted for a few hours. H had to leave to go check in at work, so I was kind of happy they didn't bring her during that time, but seriously, it took way too long. I think they had 3 babies born right around the same time, so I think that's what the problem was? But if they weren't actually doing anything with her at the time, they should've brought her to me until they were ready for her.

Now your posts are all making me Angry At least now I know better for next time!

  • 7 hours seems like a lot to me too. I must admit, I get some stabs of jealousy when I hear about moms who got to BF right away and have their babies close to them. DD came out, they delivered her onto my chest. She was born with her eyes open and she looked at me and complained (she still gives that look sometimes and I love it) and then they took her away from me to the NICU and I couldn't see her for 20 hours because I had a fever at the end of labor and she was born with a high temp.

  • E didn't leave our sight the entire time we were in the hospital.  Our hospital didn't have a nursery so they did most of the stuff right there in the delivery room.  Some of the other stuff that had to do was done in this one room in the mother baby unit but we were allowed to go with her and watch.

  • They never gave him back, cuz he had to go to the NICU for having air outside of his lungs....he was breathing to hard cuz of it. So wasn't to fun for me... but now he is a crazy boy thrashing his way around, LOL

  • i had p in a really hippy area so they were all about one on one with baby. they did every test in our room with him maybe a few feet away from me, my husband gave him the first bath with a nurses help, he never left our room for the first few days. however, i was in the hospital for 5 days b/c i was having terrible bp issues & was sick as a dog (i got the flu-probably from being in the hospital) so after a rough day of wrenching my guts out they told me i should seriously consider sending him to their nursery for a bit & take a nap....i passed out & they brought him to be about 5hrs later when they couldnt keep him satisfied any longer & he was hungry.

i've been wondering the same thing lately though b/c #2 is being born in an entirely different state & a friend of mine told me at the hospital i'll be having #2 at they do take the baby from you for a bit at first...i'm not so sure i like that idea.

  • Maybe 10-15 minutes, and she was in the same room as I was.  I got stitched and delivered the placenta (so I am told, I was busy staring over at her), and she got cleaned.  They came and got her periodically over the next 48 hours though for various tests, and one time we took her to the nursery so H & I could go down to the cafeteria, but 95% of the time she was in the room with us.
  • After I woke up I got to see her for 10ish minutes, about an hour later.  I didn't get to hold her til 16 hours later.

I'd be pissed about 7 hours in an uneventful birth.  Hell, I'd probably be pissed about any amount of time if the kid & I are both fine, especially if my H isn't allowed to take her too.

This. We roomed in with him. They took him to the NICU for a little while after we had our golden hour because he had swallowed fluid on the way out..and they wanted to make sure they got it all out. (They did try to pound it out of him in the room.) But other than that he never left our side.

  • I got to hold DD right away, and spent 45 minutes in peace with her at home before we even wiped her down, weighed & measured her. It was AWESOME.

With DS they took him right away to clean, measure and such, and then gave him to me for 5 minutes, then whisked him away for tests for an hour Sad

  • 7 hours?? That is inexcusable if she went anywhere but the NICU.

Barring complications, there is nothing that really needs to be done in the first few hours. "ZOMG weigh that baby stat or something will go drastically wrong!!1!" No. It's all about convenience. There is no reason they can't make sure baby is stable while you're holding him, let you cuddle for a while, then have baby weighed, measured, eye-gooped, vit k'ed at your bedside.

Tell them what WILL happen. Say "MY BABY will stay with me unless there is an emergency."

The pedi needs to check out the baby, and if your hospital has a nursery so does the nursery nurse- but that takes 20 minutes, tops. Tell your nurse you will wait until the pedi is actually there instead of waiting around in the nursery.

Ughh I'm mad for you. 7 hours?? Who thought that was a good idea?

It's your baby, say no. Ask if it's an emergency. A bath is not an emergency, neither is a nursery nurse assessment. Tell them to wait.

  • My baby was never taken out of the room.  Everything was done right there.

  • I just asked my H cause I couldn't remember and his memory is foggy too..

I had a c-section and they took him in the other room to do the apgar and stuff with my H. Then I'm not sure but I think they took him for the bath (without DH) and then brought him back to nurse in recovery?? Or maybe they gave him his bath after I nursed in recovery then brought him to me when I was in my room.

I wish I wrote this stuff down cause I'm not sure. He did sleep in the nursery at night and they just brought him to me to nurse through the night.

It was definitely NOT 7 hours or anywhere near that.
