We had tinsel growing up. No pets and it went out with the tree.
DH said he wants garland so I was planning on buying some this year. I put it on the hall tree, just not the big one.
I tried to c&p a pic from KelleHampton's blog of her tree- she did off-white ribbon and multiple strings of beads and it looks so pretty. I think I'm going to try that instead.
At our house, tinsel would = cat abdominal surgery.
Ditto. Or sparkly hanging poop from said cat. We had that with our family cat growing up.
I love the look of the ribbon garland, but have never done them.
Yep - we had a very "fancy" litter box one year... never did tinsel again. I voted garland, but our garland is really long strands of red beads and then a fabric ribbon strand thing.
Growing up we always did garland. The last couple years I've always done ribbon but I changed up the tree this year and can't make up my mind what I want to do. Our tree is pretty plain so I definitely need something to liven it up a bit but I def. don't want to do traditional garland.
Le sigh. I guess I'm going to Hobby Lobby today....
I'm a special snowflake. I love tinsel and we always had it growing up. It's my favorite part. But having a dog and a ceiling fan, DH and I have opted out of tinsel, so we use garland because I apparently have a serious need to silver sparkle metal on my tree.
I use a natural-looking garland with pine cones and poinsettias for color. My mom uses bead strands and then just sticks white poinsettias in the tree all over and it always looks really classy.
Hobby Lobby has great garland choices that are not your traditional metallic sparkly stuff from when we were kids. I bought this there last year.
Actually if you go and see this there (it is a mix of beads and little silver snowflakes) PLEASE let me know. I was a little short on what I bought last year but when I went back they were sold out.

I'm probably going later when Audrey wakes up from her nap. If I see it, I'll go ahead and buy it for you - how much (length) do you need?
I voted "Other", but I actually use strings of red beads and strings of silver beads, plus red and silver ribbon, so maybe some would consider that "garland".
When I think of tree garland, I think of strands of the shiny mylar stuff - same material as tinsel - wrapped around the tree.
I voted other because I hate tinsel--super messy--and to me garland is that fluffy, shredded looking string of shiny mylar. I think it is not attractive.
We use a string of silver beads that I purchased at garden ridge eons ago. I like that I can drape it, and it's not messy.

I use this stuff on a wire that's kind of like garland, but not really? i voted other.

I do a wired ribbon instead. Less I have to worry about with our dog eating....
You can kinda get the idea here with this camera phone pic.

I guess I should answer my own poll....

ditto for the big tree. The little tree in the family room (Abby's tree that she solely get to decorate) has died(red and green) cheerios garland.

I think my definition of garland is different than most.
it's popcorn and berries strung together. so it works fine with a little tinsel here and there
I've never had a pet try to eat the tinsel nor the garland.
We do ribbon. I got that from DH's side of the family.
I always want to use ribbon but I can't get it even. I can't get the garland even either but I can get it more sane than the ribbon.
I love tinsel for it's nostalgia.
DH uses lametta tinsel and puts them on, one by one.
I told you already. He's a tree nerd.
We've never had an issue with our dogs getting into it.
Ditto this. I have never used either. I prefer pretty ribbon
