High-Risk Pregnancy

Cyst Removal Surgery

I hope this is the right spot for this...I am currently 15W and have multiple cysts in my left ovary.  The ovary has measured 12cm for the last 3 weeks and we met with a Gynecological Oncologist on Monday who suggests we proceed with surgery to remove the ovary since it is not resolving on it's own.  At this point he still thinking that the risk of this being cancerous is low, but we will not know for sure until it is removed.  He believes this can be done laprascopically, but also informed me that the risk of miscarriage from the surgery goes as high as 25 - 33%.  Has anyone else had experience with this?  I would love to hear some positive news since the idea of surgery during pregnancy is pretty scary.

Re: Cyst Removal Surgery

  • This might be a totally dumb resposne since I am not an expert...

But I also had a cyst, and my Dr just waited until after I had the baby to remove it. Of course maybe mine was smaller, but is this at all an option for you? That miscarriage rate is high, and would scare me too :-(

  • I don't have any experience. I just wanted to say I'm sorry you're going through this. I've had many simple and hemorragic cysts that resolved either on their own or with BCP. Since you've been referred to an oncologist, I'm guessing yours is more of a complex, solid mass. Did the doctor say when the ideal time to perform surgery is? Do you have time for a second opinion? I know the risk of miscarriage is scary but if it is ovarian cancer, I believe its usually fast spreading. I don't think there's any "right" answer. I hope you get some more information and are able to make a decision you're at peace with. Good luck. Please keep us posted.
  • I have one as well but my doctor has decided to leave it till till after I deliver. can your doctor say why it needs to happen during your pregnancy instead of waiting? The risk seems high unless they think something is going on.
  • We have consulted with the best doctors for this type of issue and for us it sounds like the best option is to remove my ovary at 17 weeks.  The good news is that it doesn't seem to be growing, but it also will not shrink.  With how large it is, if we watch it through the pregnancy we could run into an emergency situation later which would be much more dangerous for Baby.  According to our OBGYN the risks are lower than we are being quoted from the surgeon, but he explained to us that he is just trying to take everything into account so that we can make an informed decision.  We have scheduled the surgery for next week and think this is the right move for me and Baby.  We are ready to move past this and begin enjoying Baby!  Thanks for all the kind words!
