Random Hospital Tour Question for those who did one

We had our hospital tour yesterday and I was by far the furthest along there. Most of the ladies were in the early twenty-ish week range, and one woman was still in the teens and our tour was full - there were well over 40 people.

I would have never thought to do the tour so early in the pregnancy. So my question is, how far along were you when you did the tour?

  • I was 30 weeks, and I think I was the least far along. We had one lady due in two weeks!

  • 34 weeks. One other person looks as far along or further than me, everyone else was much smaller.

  • I did mine early (19 weeks) but it was only because we were thinking about switching OBs mainly because we did not like the hospital that he delivered at. We were shopping around for a new doctor and we figured we would work backwards byfiguring out which hospital we liked and then getting recommendations for OBs that deliver at that hospital. Worked out well. We did end up switching docs and feel much better about the new hospital.
  • I was about 35-36 weeks when we took the tour with our first child. It was after our birthing class.

  • Whoa, that's alot of people on the tour. How annoying for the patients who were actually in labor there... to hear a huge herd of rubber neckers out in the hall...

We had our tour along with our birthing class this past Saturday, so I was 32 weeks. Other than one lady who was 26w, I was the least far along. There were 6 couples, so 12 people and our RN who was teaching the class. Even then I felt like it was alot of people to shove into a L&D room at once, when we're all trying to get a feel for everything.

ETA: We were the only ones on our tour.  They don't do scheduled tours anymore.  You can just drop by and if someone is available and a room is open they will give you a tour.  They prefer you call ahead, but we didn't cause we were already at the hospital and figured it was no big deal if they couldn't get us in.

  • I did the tour and birthing classes when I was pregnant with my DD at the start of the third trimester.  I did not do a tour this time since I am delivering at the same hospital.

  • I didn't do a tour this time because it's the same hospital I delievered at last time, but last time I was around 26ish weeks I think?  Somewhere around the start of the 3rd trimester anyway.  That was only because the only pre-natal course that we could fit in with my husbands work schedule was at that time, so that's when we did it!  I think there were 3 couples on the tour?

  • I was 20something weeks. A hospital that's nearby recently became an option as a place to deliver under my insurance so we wanted to check it out. I wanted to decide between that hospital and the one I had DD1 at so I could take care of my pre-registration paperwork. I think most of the other women were farther along than me. There were maybe 10 couples.

  • I was about 25w along, but I would have preferred closer to 33-35w. We took what they had available since they said there are fewer tours during the holidays.

ETA: Our tour was a part of our childbirth classes, and they recommended those between 25-30w for comfort reasons. I am sure most people thought I was really early on since I am just starting to pop.

  • I was one of the furthest along on my tour. I couldn't tell who was the pregnant one in some of the groups of people who brought a posse with them. I thought it was kind of weird. I would never of thought of going as early as they did.

  • Mine was approximately a month ago, so 31-weeks or so.  Everyone there looked farther along than me, except for one woman who was pregnant with twins and due in February.

  • We did ours at 20 weeks bc we had to go up to the hospital for our anatomy check and figured we would knock it out while there.

  • I went around 8 weeks, but I was trying to decide which hospital we wanted to use and figured it was best to make the decision early.  Everyone else on the tour was closer to the 34-36 week mark.

The hospital we ended up choosing doesn't allow L&D tours - they say it's to protect patient privacy and safety.  I find this a little strange, but I can understand their reasoning.

  • We did our tour on Friday evening just before our breastfeeding class. I was 32 weeks.

L&D Friday night was a ghost town.  I think there was only 2 or 3 closed doors so we got to peek in on both the big and small rooms.  Let me tell you, the "big" rooms aren't that big!  The volunteer that gave us the tour said that since I'm giving birth vaginally they'll try to get me in one of the big rooms.  I guess they leave the smaller rooms for those who are having scheduled c/s because they don't need the warmer and other equipment for delivery in there.

  • I think it totally depends on why you are going on the tour. Some people check out a couple hospitals to see where they want to deliver. They would obviously need to decide this earlier in the pregnancy. Other people do the tour so that they know where to go and get signed in when they are in labor and what to expect. These folks are probably going to much further along in their pregnancy.

AFM: I did my tour with my child birth class at 33 weeks. We already knew we would be delivering at that hospital and the tour was just to give us a general idea of where we would need to go and where all the waiting rooms were located for extra family.

  • I just did mine on Saturday so we did it at the same time.  Everyone else in my class were closer to 30 weeks.

  • I think I was 34 weeks last time.  I am delivering at a different hospital this time and I wasn't even planning to go on a hospital tour but I signed DS up for a sibling class that includes a hospital tour so I'll be 34 weeks for this one too.
  • I was really excited about this pregnancy and did my tour when I was like 8 weeks pregnant.  I was REALLY excited.  =)

  • I'll be 33 weeks 2 days. I'm delivering at an entirely different hospital system than our first 9 years ago. I work for this hospital system, but not this particular hospital, so it should be interesting!

  • I did mine at 34 weeks with about 12 other couples.  I'm a FTM, and I don't think I would have gotten as much from the tour/had the questions to ask if it was earlier in my pregnancy.  Plus with my memory these days I would probably have forgotten it all by now, ha!
