Lap Child on Southwest?

Has anyone flown Southwest with your kiddo on your lap?

If you have, did you have to show LO's birth certificate?

Re: Lap Child on Southwest?

  • I don't know about that airline, but when we book our flights with Westjet, you have to book the child as well and put in their birthday. Then when we get to the gate we have to show identification so I always show her birth certificate.

This. But we have never been asked for id for him, and we've flown at least 5 times (just in Canada though). We were also told his health card is enough so thats all I ever bring.

  • Southwest seems to be the airline that asks for the BC the most (even if the child is clearly under 2).  I would definitely have it with you.

  • Definately take it.

I have been asked, and not asked. Frankly it bothers me when I'm not asked. I feel like anyone could take my kid on an airplane. (Not that their birth cert. has photo id or anything, but I still find it scary)

  • Southwest did ask us for it. Other airlines did not. I agree with pp that it is a little scary that it seems anyone could take my kid on those that don't require any identification.

  • Thank you everyone.

DH didn't think it would be a big deal since DD is obviously not 2. We have been working to get a birth certificate for like a month now, and keep encountering glitches. We fly next week, so I was really starting to freak out.

But, I think we have it all figured out now, and I'll just go there in person.

  • I flew southwest on sunday with B on my lap and will again next Sunday. You just need something with proof of age. I used her insurance card that has her bday.

  • Never flown Southwest but have flown American a handful of times. Never been asked for any kind of id for LO. I have his insurance card on me at all times. I did bring his SS card the first time I flew with him just in case.

  • I just flew with DS less than a month ago and I didn't have his birth certificate.  We flew at 3 months and didn't have it either.  At that time they didn't even say anything to me about not having his b/c.  This time they make a big deal about it.  She said he could be stopped at anytime to show proof of his age.  She also said he could possibly pass for a 2 yr old.  That's about when I stopped listening to her b/c DS was 10 months at that time.  Yea freaking right moron.  So yea, it's best to bring it with you.
