People rave about them if their baby uses the Soothie paci, which is commonly the pacifier of choice/ offered by hospitals. We switched to the MAM pacifiers the week after we got home because I liked those better and she took them but if you will use the Soothie/ gumdrop pacifiers, then they will probably come in handy.
It's basically a soothie paci wth a stuffed toy on the end. Yes. Soothie pacis are given out at hospitals and kids tend to like those. I wouldn't say they are the best paci in the world though. It looks like a bottle nipple.
We have three for DD and she still uses them! I originally got them because her paci would always fall out of her mouth when she was in her swing or bouncer. With the weight of the little animal, the paci stayed in her mouth better.
Now we only use them at nap time and when she's sleeping at night. The only thing that wakes DD up in the night is if she can't find her paci. She usually reaches out with her eyes closed trying to find it if it falls out so with the wubbanub she can easily grab it and put it back in her mouth.
DD prefers soothies and so our wubbanub is nice because she can put it back in her mouth a little bit, and it's nice for me when I'm in the car I can reach behind my seat and find it in her careat a lot easier. I like them.

yes this. My sisters children have all used the wubbanub and they love them! if they fall out of the mouth the baby can easily grab the stuffed animal and put it back in.
DD has a Wubbanub and we certainly think it's the best paci in the world! lol
When we decided to use a pacifier I went out and bought every kind Target had. After trying one or two other brands, DD obviously liked the Soothie the best. So then we bought a Wubbanub and it worked well for us. A new Wubbanub was actually the first thing I bought for this next LO.
DD still sleeps with hers---she loves the tag at the bottom and rubs it between her fingers.
Oh, and we didn't get a Soothie from our hospital, they use a different brand--Avent maybe? If you go with a different paci and want a clip for it, we really like the Booginhead ones---they also work well for keeping toys off of restaurant, grocery store, etc. floors.

You should check on these other paci toy animals:
Binki Bear (was made in China, now made in USA)
Pacimals (made in China)
Both of these paci holder toys are compatible with other brands than soothie.
