Gentian violet for thrush?

Anyone have experience using this? DS has a very stubborn case of thrush.  Our LC suggested gentian violet because nystatin, plain yogurt, acidophilus and probiotics don't seem to be enough to completely knock it out.  Not sure what else to do but I'm a little hesitant to use it since it sounds a little tricky.

  • gentian violet is made from coal tar. I'd try coconut oil, first.

  • Yup, forgot to say we've been using the Nutiva oil for a few weeks. Worked great on the diaper rash and on his face but not the inside (cheeks).  He also eats the Artisana brand coconut butter but I don't know if it's raw enough to help.

  • hm...I'm out of ideas. I lucked out (?) and only had thrush on me, but not ever in Baz's mouth. Lots of air time and coconut oil. Then some oatmeal baths and aloe for the aftermath.

  • we are dealing with thrush too. i just started the oral meds for myself bc i have it pretty bad on my nipples. the nystasin worked well for E's diaper area and we are on our 2nd bottle of nystasin liquid but i don't think its working. I really, really need to go get some probiotics.

  • DD and I had thrush twice and her pedi recommended gentian violet. It worked really well for us but definitely was tricky since it can stain like crazy.

  • Yeah, I used it for Noah a few months ago, after Nystatin didn't work.  It was summer, so some of this won't work for you...but I'd strip him down to a diaper, wrap him in a dark colored towel, and I put a little chapstick on his lips and chin (I don't know that this helped, but it made me feel better....)  I'd swab the thrushy parts of him, and let him roll around on the towels for a few minutes.  Then I'd carefully clean everything up.  I'd put him back in clothes about fifteen minutes after applying.  It was a pain, but it only took a week to clear up the thrush he'd had for over a month and a half, so I was pleased.  And you only have to apply it once a day.  It was hard to find the gentain violet...but Target ordered it for me, and it was there in one day.  Also, Noah got a little blister on his tongue from where he'd sucked on the qtip a bit...keep the application time short and don't let the qtip sit anywhere too long.  He never seemed bothered by the stuff though.  Expect a lot of weird looks from strangers about the deep purple color of baby's lips....I just said Noah was exploring his goth side.
