Pregnant with #3 ... First time on Prime

Hi ladies.

I'm having some anxiety about being on Prime. They assigned me a doctor and their is no way to check him out before I meet him. I could like him, but also might not. I know we can call and demand a new practitioner from Tricare, but I'm really nervous about the whole thing. It seems Prime can be a blessing and a curse, so any advise/tips to make this easier would be appreciated.

THANKS! Big Smile

  • My advice is to go in there with an optimistic attitude. Don't go in there worried or expecting to dislike him/her or looking for faults. S/he could be the best doctor you've ever had. I've had some great ones in the military care system (and some I just didn't click with, too, but I've had that out in the civilian world as well). If you really don't click with your doctor, as you said, you can always request a PCM change.

    Ditto the above.

  • I love being on Prime.  I was on standard for 2 months when I first signed up and I hated it.

  • The doctor you have during your pregnancy may not even be the doctor you deliver with.. I wasn't really much of a fan of the doctor I chose (yes I chose him but only because the MTF on post was too full and this doctor had the latest afternoon hours in the area) but he didn't even end up delivering my daughter..

  • Okay, thanks ladies. I was having a negative attitude because I've heard so many horror stories. I'll go in there positive. Thanks!

Totally agree with this.  At the base I'm at they kind of just bounce you around to all the doctors because there's no guarantee of who will actually deliver you and this way you get to know all of them.  I'm actually seeing my 3rd doctor on Dec. 21st and so far I haven't had a bad experience.  I had a scare one day and when I called the obgyn office they didn't make it sound like I was being stupid and actually encouraged me to go to urgent care just so I would feel better knowing everything was all right.

Of course if there is a doc you like you can always request him or her for your appts. but no guarantee they will deliver you Stick out tongue

  • My MTF offers Centering Pregnancy care for low-risk moms.  I did this with DS#2 and the current LO.  I get a list with all my appts at my first and I see the same MW for every appt.  Plus, in addition to seeing the provider, you take a class about pregnancy nutrition, breastfeeding, L&D, etc, and get great insight from other mothers.

That being said, I loved the MW but since she only works regular business hours and was out of town when DS was born, I had an OB I had never met deliver.
