I've never had one before, and I really want one this year (I blame the Mormon design bloggers). Are they necessarily fake? Ill-advised with kids? Toxic? Anything you know would be more thank I know!
When I was little, my grandmother always had one so it reminds me of the 80s. I didn't know you could even still get a flocked tree. She always had a real tree and they would flock it at the tree place. I have no idea what the flocking it though so I can't comment about the toxicity or anything.

We used to have one when I was little. It was really pretty, but I had some sort of obsessive need to pull the flocking off of the individual pine needles so the tree looked like crap after a few years.
I wouldn't get one at this point because the flocking did shed (even without me messing with it) and I'd be worried about DD eating it. Maybe nowadays they don't lose the flocking as easily?
LLCG, this is a flocked tree. They spray white stuff all over the branches to look like snow.
You can get real and artificial christmas trees that are flocked. I just don't know if there are any places around here that flock real trees. My understanding is the flocking is typically a mixture of cellulose and an adhesive. A lot of the mixtures add flame retardant as well because flocking is quite flammable.
You can also buy tree flocking kits and flock your own tree. I don't know how well that stuff works since I've never tried.
I don't even know WHAT a flocked xmas tree is. How's that for help?
It's fake snow. They used to come in white, pink, and aqua, and got popular in the 60's.. They became very d?class?, and my family was too hippie to ever consider it. But over the last few years I've been finding all the lights and plastic of Christmas sort of depressing. So I was thinking to just go with it, instead of trying to be natural. A vintagey Christmas. Not to mention my girls would flip their sh!t for a fake snowed tree.

Hold the phone. You can get pink flocking? I want it bad! Too bad DH would never go for it in a million years.

Flamable + Christmas tree? Scary!
Let me restate that. Flocking without flame retardant is flammable. Therefore, they add flame retardant. Don't buy a flocked tree that is not labeled as flame retardant.
I know they're a hugeass mess. My parents got one in Cali a few years ago and it was such a disaster. It would shed if you so much as looked at it, and when it came time to take it out of the house the flocking got everywhere.

I saw a post on the Decorating board where a lady put fake snow on her tree. I saw a big bag of fake snow at Walmart yesterday. She just tore off pieces and placed it on tree. It wasn't very expensive so if you don't like it you could just take it back off and not be out much $.
There is a place on HWY 620 right next to Lakeway Elementary that does flocking. My sister and I were there last weekend and they can do it but I don't recall the name of the place. We may go back this weekend and get a flocked tree, it was too wet last weekend. I can try to get you the name if you want?

Oh, yeah! They're lifestyle/mommy/design blogs, and they are highly addictive. And they all link to each other, so you can lose a whole night reading them. They are all pretty, happy, well-dressed, and hip. Think DIY Anthropologie. Most are SAHMs, and they make it look so fun and chic. Of course, some support their families because they make mad money through advertising. Check out Nat the Fat Rat and Rockstar Diaries. They are my faves.

Yes, please! I'm thinking table-top flocked tree out of reach of rolling baby girl.

I'm hooked on a couple of mormon design bloggers, too: Oh Happy Day and Design Mom. I think they're sisters. Anyway, I have their blogs in my readers, and occasionally fall into an internet hole reading about pretty things and how they're currently living in France.

France?! That might put me over edge- as in "Why is my life so lame?" But off I go to check them out! (And, yes, they're all related!!! C. Jane and Nie Nie are sisters!)

all I know about flocked xmas trees is that my parents got a real tree and had it flocked when I was about 11 years old. I thought it was the MOST BEAUTIFUL thing on earth. I was obsessed.
My mom never did it again. I am guessing it was a huge pain. But, oh, I loved it so much.

I've googled and now I NEED a pink one. Sigh.

Growing up we had a flocked tree some years. It was always a live tree, and they would flock it at the place before we got home.
I remember one time my mom attempted to flock it herself (just basically aerosol spray cans) but it didnt turn out as well.
I have no idea on toxicity though - I didnt even think of that. . .
