Any experience with Fifth's Disease during pregnancy?

I'm trying not to freak out with all the terrible things that I read online.

We took my DD back to the pediatrician today, and what the weekend doctor called an allergic reaction, she thinks is either Fifth's Disease or a strep rash. The rapid strep test came back inconclusive, so she did the send away strep test, and took blood for Fifth's. The should take 2-3 days to come back.

I have an appt with my OB tomorrow anyway,so I'll ask him, but just wondering if anyone was exposed during pregnancy,or has any experiences to share.

Thanks!

  • I was exposed while pregnant with Logan. My OB wasn't concerned because I have probably already had it and built an immunity to it. Try not to stress...easier said than done.

  • I was exposed to it in the later part of my 2nd trimester. My OB wasn't too concerned that I was exposed, but wanted to know if I came down with it (I didn't). They told me that the risks were greater if you're in your 1st trimester.
  • Thanks for the info.

Trying  not to worry about it, but I'm not so good at that! Plus the pediatrician was very concerned that I was pregnant, which freaked me out.

  • I know I had the test while pregnant at some point and I think it tells whether you have been exposed to it. apparently I had been at some point and never knew it.  I am sorry you are stressed! I'm not good at not worrying either so I can understand.

  • We thought that DD#1 had it when I was about 30 weeks with DD#2.  They did a blood test and it turned out that I was exposed to it at some point--like almost every adult age 30+.  They were not worried at all, but did the blood test to ease my mind.  You work with kids, so I'd put a million dollars down that you've been exposed in the past!

  • DD1 got it when I was in the first tri with #2.  I took a test and didn't have the antibodies, so they monitored me, and I believe gave me a second test several weeks later (can't remember how much longer)  to check again.  If I remember correctly, you can be exposed but not really get sick as an adult, and also they want to make sure that is what it was if I was sick.  My ped was concerned as well, but my OB took a "lets not get stressed unless we know you have it"

Also, another IIRC is that my ped did a blood test to confirm that is what DD1 had in the first place, which they wouldn't normally do.  Is your ped sure?

GL, try not to worry, but I know it worried me, so easier said than done.

ETA:  I just saw he's doing the blood test!  Good

  • Odds are that with you having been teaching for a while, you've already been exposed and don't have anything to worry about.

  • It is only a problem if you are in your 1st trimester. My sister is a teacher and there was an outbreak at her school. They tested my sister and said she already had it so no worries. Most adults have already been exposed to it so then you would be fine. I wonder if your OB will have you tested for it? GL ((((HUGS)))))
  • THANK YOU for your responses.  I really do appreciate it. I am happy to be out of the first trimester, and hopefully all the little buggers have given me enough germs over the years :)

    Thanks again!

  • My DD got it while I was pg too. The OB didn't even seem concerned. She said most people are exposed to it young, so there wasn't hardly any threat. Didn't even do testing or anything.

  • DS had it when I was PG with DD.  The OB wasn't too concerned b/c I was in my 3rd tri, but I had her test my titers for peace of mind.  I had already been exposed and had immunities, so no worries.  I would ask for the bloodwork.
