Tessalon Perles

I went to the doctor and he prescribed me Tessalon Perles (Benzonatate 100mg) & Amoxicillin 500mg for my sinusitis & cough. While I've heard that Amoxicillin is safe to take, I am less sure about the Tessalon Perles because it's a class C drug.

Has another else here been prescribed this, too? I never even heard of it before today...

Re: Tessalon Perles

  • Yeah, but I don't trust my doctors! The doc I saw today seemed a little confused on what drugs to prescribe me... so I'm apprehensive.

Ha!  you sound like me!  Moms know more :).

I would be more concerned that you don't trust your dr's.....

After my last pregnancy, I've learned not to trust every single medication the doctor's gave me. Believe me, I have reason to doubt them.

  • I'm with Colleen on being worried about you not trusting you doctor.  But moving on...

Who prescribed the meds- your PCP or your OB?  If it was your PCP and you're still not sure then check with your OB.

My PCP prescribed me the meds. The doctor who I saw today was new at the health center and was a bit confused on what meds to prescribe me...

My OB on the other hand, I do trust more, and I will be calling her tomorrow about it.

  • The main reason I posted this on here was because I was just curious to know if any of you have been prescribed this medicine... don't worry, I'm still going to call my OB.

  • Tessalon Perles is just a cough supressant and usually as needed.  If it worries you, don't take it, the ammoxicillin is really going to be the med you need.

  • You should call your OB tomorrow and ask what they would suggest as a cough suppressant. There are many safe over the counter options unless you are coughing so bad you feel like your gonna die I would wait. Thats just my option and you need to do whats best for you.

Also its very important to have a practitioner that you trust. I also have issues with trusting doctors, but I am a nurse and I have been in heath care a long time so my reasons my differ from yours.

Best of luck and I hope you feel better soon!

  • Don't feel bad, I don't trust hardly any doctors either.  It is a paid profession.  End of story.

Wowzers!  They do have to go through 8 years of schooling and 2 years of specialty residency...more than I did to get my job and I certainly hope people trust that I know what I'm doing while I'm at work.

  • It's not that I don't trust doctors... I just don't trust the doctors in my area! LOL I live in a rural town that is always 10-20 years behind in technology... and if you want premium health care, you have to travel at least 2.5 hours towards DC to receive the best treatment... otherwise, you have to deal with mediocre treatment from doctors who either have no clue, don't care, or are too overwhelmed with patients. It's sad, but true! And unfortunately, my last ob during my last pregnancy was the perfect example of these issues.
