Sciatic nerve PAIN!

So I've had sciatic nerve pain for several weeks now.  Starts in my left buttocks and goes down the back of my thigh.  I literally have to lift my left leg in and out of the car, it hurts THAT bad.  Well a few days ago I started having this cramping feeling in my calf on the same side.  I originally thought I'd just had a muscle spasm while sleeping which can linger for a few days but am now wondering if it is connected to the sciatic nerve issues.  Anyone experience this?  Any advice?  Ugh!

Re: Sciatic nerve PAIN!

  • Get yourself to a chiropractor, stat!  I'd had sciatic pain on and off for a few weeks and this past weekend it got so bad that I almost literally couldn't walk, couldn't help around the house, couldn't play with DD, was immobilized--torture!  I went in for my first appt this morning and already I can feel relief; I plan to go as many times as it takes for as long as it takes to keep the pain from getting to that point again.  Was skeptical at first but I'd had one adjustment done when I was pregnant with DD and having lower back pain, and it was AMAZING the difference afterward.  I've read you can do certain yoga poses to help relieve some of that pressure but for me it was too intense even for that by this point.  Hope you feel better soon!

  • Thank you so much for your advice.  I have a check-up at ob on Wednesday so maybe i'll ask if they recommend any chiropractor in particular.  I am desperate, as I"m sure you know if you've experience similar pain!

Good to know. I have it so bad on my right side it is debilitating! Did you doctor say that the chiropractor was ok? Think I will just call mine to find out for sure.

  • I am dealing with sciatic nerve pain as well, but not as bad as yours is. I hope it doesn't get that bad because it sounds awful! Your sciatic nerve does connect in your calf though so it probably is connected Confused
  • I've been dealing with it for weeks.  I set up an appointment with my chiropractor for this coming Saturday.  Good to know that it may help.  Anything to make this go away will be very welcome.  Walking around for Christmas shopping has been absolute torture!

  • Your sciatic nerve splits at the area just above the back of your knee and travels down the back of your calf.

I am biased and would send you to a Woman's Health Physical Therapist and NOT a chiropractor. I am only biased because I am a WH PT.

    Try these stretches.

    https://www.spine-health.com/wellness/exercise/exercise-sciatic-pain-piriformis-syndrome

All stretches should be held for at least 20sec and you should try doing them as least 2-3x/day.

Let me know is this helps.

  • I have the same problem as you, just on my right side. I have to lift my right leg to climb stairs and to get in and out of my car :( I asked my doctor about it and he said the only thing I could do was stay off my feet as much as I could and to take tylenol. He didn't recommend me going to the chiropractor because I need back surgery really bad, but because I wanted kids...he suggested that I wait. I'd talk to your doctor before you go see a chiropractor because if I had just gone, I could be in a wheelchair now.

  • Mine is constant going down my right butt cheek.  It kills and some  times makes me sit or stop and think about if I really want to move or not!  Thanks for the stretches, jewinkle!  I'm trying those today!!
