Avocado instead of cereal for first food (when its time)

So from the other thread, it sounds like there are a few of us wanting skip the cereal and use avocado as the first food.  I love this idea because I believe a lot of the cereal is a filler but also because we love avocados and would love to start LO on a first natural food!

Are you going to start giving in chunks and let them eat what they can get into their mouth (BLW)?  Or will you mash up and add milk to get more of a puree texture?

Also, any good research based facts on using avocado as a first food, I am receiving a lot of skepticism.

Thanks!

For now I'm planning on mashing with milk...I haven't done much reading yet on BLW.

  • Someone posted this website a while ago & I saved it for feeding time. Here is what they say about Avocado.

I talked to the pedi about skipping baby cereal all together, and she said the reason she suggests it is because of the iron content. We will probably introduce cereal and avocado around the same time (obviously not simultaneously).

Don't they say though that the iron in avocado is about equal to whats in cereal?

  • I love the momtastic website!  I have definitely thought about skipping cereal and going to avacados, bananas and sweet potatoes when he's ready to start eating.  I'm going to talk to the pedi about it, but I am confident that they are healthier and a better alternative than cereal.

You know, I haven't looked into it since talking to the pedi. I'm not really sure of the actual iron content. I will probably ask again closer to 6 months because I'm hoping to wait until then to start solids. I'm not opposed to cereal so I'll probably just stick with that if the pedi recommends it (along with fruits/veggies).

  • We talked about doing BLW as opposed to purees, but DH isn't comfortable with it so we're going to go ahead and puree. First will be avocado, then sweet potato, something like peas or broccoli, and banana.

We're excited to see what he'll like. Also, I've gotten a lot of people questioning our reasoning for not doing rice cereal. I've been reading things by Dr. Mercola and Dr. Greene, and gave some of these to our day care provider when she questioned us.

Again, it's just a personal choice. DH and I agreed that just because rice cereal is what's been done in the past doesn't mean it's the way we need to continue things. It's like the whole crib bumpers debate. New info comes out every so often, and you need to decide what is best for your family.

  • I do like the wholesomebabyfoods.com website, however, there is misinformation on there about tomatoes.

Tomatoes are acidic in nature, but when digested RAW they have an alkalizing effect in the gut.  So, if a child suffers from reflux, it's not going to flare because of tomatoes.

  • Avocado will be one of the early foods we start with--pureed--but I do plan to start with a cereal. I'll start her on oatmeal first, b/c like everyone has said--rice has next to no nutritional value, and can also cause constipation in babies--so I'm going to skip that unnecessary step and go straight to oatmeal.
