Reaction to MMR/Chicken Pox vaccines

Did anyone's LOs have pretty bad reactions to the chicken pox or MMR vaccines?

The LOs got their shots last Wed. They were fine all week but Saturday, DS got a fever (about 100) and got really fussy. Saturday night, he wouldn't go to sleep and just moan/whimpered/cried in his crib for two hours (with us trying to console him/rock him/etc). He finally fell asleep but woke up 90 minutes later and screamed inconsolably. We had to break out our tricks from Happiest Baby on the Block to soothe him. He eventually slept in our bed from 12pm-6am.

Yesterday, he seemed better but took super short naps and was still running a low fever. He also started to get a rash/bumps around his mouth. Last night, he slept better but was still waking every two hours and moaning but quickly went back to sleep after we went in and pat him on the back. This morning, DD's temp was starting to go up and she was getting fussy.

Anyone else have simialr experience? I feel so bad for them and feel like we have two newborns again. We've been treating by alternating motrin and tylenol b/c the motrin alone didn't seem to do anything.

Re: Reaction to MMR/Chicken Pox vaccines

  • The ped. told me that bumps or a rash are a common side effect and to expect it within X days.  (I can't remember if it was a week, or shorter.)  At the very end of that period, DD started getting spots on her torso.  I kept her home from DC even though I didn't think she was actually getting chicken pox (just because I didn't think DC would want a kid who looked like she could be getting chicken pox), but she seemed to feel fine.  Her reaction went away in about 36 hours.

I hope both your LOs are back to normal ASAP.

  • Oh so happy to hear your DD's reaction went away within 36 hours. The pedi did tell us to expect a reaction within 2 weeks, and I was sweating it thinking this would continue for that long. Hopefully it will pass soon. We're already planning to keep them home from daycare tomorrow (they're with MIL today).
  • M had a fever and was very out of sorts for about 3-4 days after the MMR vaccine. It sucked, but I hear it's very common.

  • Our son had a reaction too.  He had a few shots that day, so we weren't sure what caused the problem.  He had a fever of 101 for 36 hours, then spots appeared a day or two later.  He had them for about 3 days.  I took him to the doctor just to be sure that's what it was.  He got the go ahead to return to daycare that afternoon, even with the spots!
