D.C. Area Babies

Monday Check-In

I know I only start these when I have something funny to share, but so be it :-)

LO is starting to express himself more and more with babble, but every once in a while an intelligible sound comes out. He has repeatedly pointed at our cat and said "itty" and at the light(s) and said "ite," even when we haven't said them first, so we think those might be actual words.

To get him to say words, we tend to hold him, point at things and say "What's that?" in that parent-y tone of voice. So this weekend, three separate times, he pointed at something and said "utz ah?" in our exact tone. I tell you, he is brilliant :-)

I think we are moving toward walking. He has started moving from crawling on hands and knees to occasionally balancing on hands and feet. He really isn't stable on his feet at all, so I think it will be a while before anything  happens, but I can see progress.

Re: Monday Check-In

  • Same with DS, this weekend, the cat jumped off the bed where we were sitting and he said Diesel I wuv you.  My DH and I looked at each other dumbfounded.  I too think he is saying a lot more than I understand.  I really need to up my mommy understanding game.

  • In the last week or two, I've finally been able to ask DD what she's been up to at daycare and she'll respond.  It's cool to be able to talk about her day and who she plays with.  (Mostly the boys, which surprised me since there are two little girls closer in age to her than one of the boys.)  And now I understand why she was excited when a train cartoon accidentally taped instead of Special Agent Oso - they have apparently watched a little Thomas at daycare.

We have reached the reject all vegetables (and most fruits) stage, and I'm trying not to be too crazy pushing the veggies.  I was a picky kid and eventually snapped out of it, so she'll live and get her nutrition somehow.  In the meantime, I'm considering how I can sneak veggies into a peanut butter sandwich :P

And finally, in the last week, she is willing to try walking up or down the stairs about half the time.  I think she's just waiting to be able to step like an adult instead of having to climb up on her knees and bump down on her bottom.  She's almost 3 feet tall now, so it won't be too long.  (DH's back is really hoping it will be soon.)

Mashed banana? We call that "The Elvis" at our house.

In the past few weeks, C's language skills have really, really taken off. It's kind of incredible to hear him talk like a tiny adult. He's also acquired those awesome grown up skills of bargaining and stalling. If you ask him if he wants apple slices or crackers for a snack, his response is "How about lollipops?". He can't brush his teeth yet because he's still drinking his milk or needs to cuddle with Daddy. Two going on twelve.

He's also going through a Daddy phase, which I think is a) adorable and b) about damn time. And it's really funny because after two years of mommy preference, DH is kind of perplexed and doesn't know what to do when it's his presence that is required for certain activities.

  • M is talking up a storm and running around/climbing everywhere these days. Apparently he is the "instigator" at daycare and shows all of the other kids how to climb up on the table, etc.

We finally got him to drink milk out of a cup last week! This was HUGE. I have to put a little bit of "drinkable yogurt" (like a smoothie) into the milk to give it flavor, but I'm totally ok with that.

  • DS is a typical toddler.  Into just about anything, climbs the stairs up and down by himself now (but of course we watch and hold his finger still), "reads" his books to us, plays with the dog and cat.  He's still on jarred baby food but is taking more and more table food in which is welcomed.  He just cut 4 top teeth in the past week so we just have the 4 bottom (canines and incisors) and his 2 year molars to go and we'll be done for a little while.  He's learned the art of "stripping" already.  We routinely find him naked in his crib in the mornings.  Thank goodness he saves taking his diaper off for daycare (my poor aunt!).

As for "Rocky", I have my first drs appt tomorrow.  I've still had some bleeding in the past week or so, some cramping and not having an appetite on some days is in full swing.  Somedays I eat like a horse, others, I'd be happy with just water and lots of ice.  DH is still far more excited about this than I am and I may scream at his mom if she asks me again when she can tell everyone.

After a discussion w/ my aunt (who has tons of child rearing experience), we've decided not to move DS downstairs.  There are just too many hazards between the laundry room, bathroom and the pellet stove that he could get into.  I think we'll be putting the new lil one downstairs and I'm content w/ that decision for now.  She suggested putting them together but I can't see how thats going to work with DS gabbering as much as he does right now plus DS's current room won't even hold a queen size bed so putting 2 cribs or moving DH and I in there is not an option.

  • Both girls are growing and changing faster than I can keep up with.  DD#2's vocabulary has really blossomed lately and it's amazing how much she understands and can communicate...it's also amazing how much she can get in to. Yesterday while I was out, DD#1 comes to DH and says, "K is playing with syrup!"  DH, thinking she just meant that DD#2 was carrying the closed and sealed syrup bottle around, says, "ok."  DD#1:  "Daddy, she's pouring it on the table, I think you need to come here!"  Good times.

Took DD#1 to the Nutcracker on Saturday at the Warner Theatre--pretty much a success.  For those planning for the future--afternoon shows in early December are a good bet--fewer people, lots of kids and good timing.  We took the metro in and with the nice weather were able to walk around the White House and see the Christmas tree.  DD is 5, so she has the ability to sit through the 2 hour performance, just barely:)  I wouldn't take anyone younger and I think she'll be even more into next year.

Fail for the morning: DD#1 was so excited about her new thermos to take hot food for lunch at school that she forgot her backpack, with her library book it in.  So I did the trip to school twice before 9am this morning and had to join my 9am call in the car.  Not exactly how I was hoping to start the week...

  • Love reading these check-ins! Over here, it's been a mixed bag - DD is growing like a weed and more and more interactive ALL the time, which is so much fun. She smiles at EVERYONE, laughed for the first time around thanksgiving and is just a huge, huge charmer day or night.... which is really lucky for her because she is STILL waking up multiple times throughout the night. The only thing that keeps me from screaming is her squeal of delight every time i walk into her room - her face lights up as if to say, 'MOM! Fancy meeting you here! So glad to run into you!".

She's really into sitting up (assisted, still, of course ;-) and into textures. She loves running her hand over all different types of fabric, petting the dog and the cat, etc...There has also been a lot of chatter in the form of blowing raspberries, 'oohs', 'aahs' and my favorite...."HIIIIIIIII" with a big smile on her face ;-)

I, however, am beyond exhausted. Because of the job/daycare fiasco we've had, DD is now going part-time to daycare even though i'm not working. I am starting to take naps while she's there and it's helping somewhat.

  • cute stories!

my son turned five this weekend (HOLY COW) and we had a superhero themed birthday party yesterday. i baked 95 cupcakes (HOLY COW). (15 for today's party at DC). the party was so much fun, all the kids came dressed and some of the parents too! very cute!

my daughter got her first purse. yep, she's only 14.5 months, but she was strutting around with it and her necklace like she was 14.5 years! again, very cute.

i'm super glad bday party planning and hosting is over, so now we can get to decorating for the season! we always wait until the day after DS's birthday, so that he can have that all to himself and not get lost in Christmas celebration.

  • DD is so cute right now.  I got a video of her this weekend making her self laugh.  It is adorable.  She's also walking everywhere and getting faster every day!
  • J is finally back on track with sleeping, yay! It took about two weeks after DST ended but he's back to normal and much happier now. He's getting much more articulate, too. This morning he surprised me with a request to "turn the light on first, please" and getting excited about his "polka dot" blankets. How does he know about polka dots? Who knows. They've also been working on manners at daycare, which is great.

He knows all his colors, and recognizes all the letters--although he doesn't know the letter so much as M = "mama" or whatever. He's starting to learn numbers, too.

He's very into Christmas (or "Chri-miss," as he calls it) and we had fun at the tree farm and trimming the tree yesterday. After polling my nesties, we are slowly introducing him to the idea of Santa, and he was really into the books we read him last night.

He's been asking for a "baby brudder" or baby sister a lot lately, I think because a lot of his daycare buddies are having younger siblings (or--their parents are, you know what I mean). So we'll see!

This is blowing my mind considering my DS is totally oblivious about getting a baby brudder next spring. We talk about it with him, but he lives for the moment.

DS is also starting to talk about his day at daycare, although it can be a mixed bag. He surprised us by answering our "how was your day question" by saying, "I played with fwiends" and rattling off the names of his daycare buddies. The next day, he answered the question with "Elephant." Ah, communication! He recognizes numbers and letters, but is terrible with colors. He loves to sing songs.

We will be transitioning DS to a big boy bed after the holidays. Wish us luck!

We call this favorite parent status and it is going on at our house now too. DD has to get approval from Dad about EVERYTHING. And, Dad has to do everything. I think he is slightly exhausted by the whole thing. Usually FPS only lasts a day or two but this has been going on for 2 straight weeks :-)

Otherwise, all is well. Talking up a storm and I am shocked at the things she remembers! Also, we have to count everything (forward and backward).

We have no problems getting her to eat bananas - she'd eat six a day if we let her.  It's just anything green or orange...

I can't WAIT until the daddy phase, and laughing at DH when he is baffled at all of a sudden being required for every diaper change or boo-boo.

  • we decorated our tree this weekend and DD had a blast! DS keeps coming to the tree and pulling off all the horse ornaments ("eeeeee" is what he calls a horse).

We have his 18mo check-up coming, I am curious as to his stats as always. He is going thru the 18mo wakeful period right now and it's just as bad as it was w/ DD, my only consolation is that I am not (7mo) pregnant this time around!

He is still very very attached to me and I am just trying to enjoy it.

We are taking DD to see Elmo at the Patriot Center and I am curious how she will do! She is very talkative and grown up, still having tantrums but so fun to be with, and such a loving sister. She can't go to bed without a lot of hugs and kisses for Mama and her brother.

She is finally understanding the concept that grandparents are her parents' parents, it's really fun to teach her that; she also knows that Uncle is Daddy's brother and Aunt is my sister.  However, the fact that Grammy (MIL) & Grandpa (FIL) are Daddy's parents vs. Grandma (SMIL) and Grandpa is a challenge! I think we are years away from that one.

She's learning how to write and has written several letters and I am impressed by her ability to count backwards!

I hope everyone is having a good holiday season, we'll need to do a AW PIP post with all our kids' pictures!

  • Why have we never Daddy stage????  I feel jilted when it should probably be the other way around.

Molly is finally talking up a storm.  I worry about her being behind on just about all of her milestones but she is still progressing just getting there later than others.  She is lucky the talking makes her completely adorable because her tantrums and behaviors make me want to leave her on the nearest street corner most days.  If I never have to hear her simultaneously whine and scream "I don't want it"  one more time it will not be too soon.  Her clinginess to me is off the charts and we have started the calm down timeouts that Maggie got at 20mo to try and teach her some patience - that I cannot always pick her up and she needs to learn to not scream and throw herself at me when that happens.

Maggie is loving the holiday season.  We have been slowly getting out the Christmas stuff and putting up the tree.  She really wants lights on the outside of our house so I need to come up with something at least for the windows - we had snowflakes but they chose this year to stop working.  Generally I find her behavior to be so much better, especially when we go visit or go to kid parties, I get to see that she is fairly well behaved.  However having to ask to do things 10 times really grates on my nerves, especially when getting ready in the morning.  I need to find better consequences or motivations because Santa is only around for another 20 days.

  • The biggest thing here is that we have a walker! H took about 2 steps unassisted on Thanksgiving, but not really again until last week. She just let go from the furniture and started the "frankenstein walk". :) DH was home sick all week so he got to see it happen which made me feel good since he missed the crawling. She has been crawling almost 8 months now and cruising almost as long so luckily we were pretty adept at moving things from her reach before this happened!

We have a few words. She says "uh-oh" consistently, in appropriate context. "doggy" "kitty" "yum" and "daddy" she says from time to time but never consistently.

I can't believe she is almost a year old! Where has time gone? Crying We're having her birthday party this weekend, just family and a couple close friends. I'm seriously in denial she is turning one.

    Lilypie Second Birthday tickers
  • The Magpie is 13 months old.  Her favorite word right now is "hug" which is awesome, well, except for when she says it and dives for the dog.  The poor dog doesn't know what to do with a kid that likes her!  She and DS have happily lived in separate spheres of the house since he was born.  DD is still gathering up words like they are treasures and has finally also started gesturing for things as well.  Not a point, but definitely indicating direction.  The pedi was minorly concerned that DD wasn't pointing at her 12 month appointment.  She isn't walking, but she did take an accidental step yesterday, so perhaps by February?  Definitely not by Christmas.

DS is absolutely enthralled by Christmas.  This is the first year that he seems to really get it.  Last year he liked it, and kind of got Santa and stuff, but this year he is just wrapping himself up in everything.  He is currently just sitting on the couch listening to Christmas music.  He doesn't want to do anything else but look at the beautiful tree and listen to the pretty music.  I cannot wait until he gets to meet the big guy on Saturday.  We got tickets to the Santa Train (VRE) and he is just going to die with excitement.  SANTA!! ON A TRAIN!!!!!  Pretty much my kid's heaven right now.

    image
  • What a neat thread!  Guinevere is 6 months old, and its mindblowing to see the personality emerge.  She will be an only child, so we definitely feel like we're getting an accurate snapshot into the future.

She demands to be the center of attention.  When we go out in public, I pretty much always have her in a sling, with a giant hairbow, and she will stare and reach out to strangers while babbling until they look over, and tell her she's pretty or something along those lines, and then she grins wildly.  Its starting to make shopping a challenge, but its hilarious.  We've actually been stopped four times now by people recognizing her from before.  Like in HomeGoods, a woman asks if we were in Wegmans the previous week, because she immediately recognized Gwen.  I think I'm going to have a huge diva on my hands!

We tried BLW and its not going as well - she much prefers typical purees.  She had been sleeping through the night for 12 hours a stretch, and the last two weeks has been up constantly.  Finally figured out she hates pooping more solid poops, so a little prune juice in the afternoon for a good movement before bed has been the solution - back to sleeping through the night.  Thank goodness!!

  • Sleep is still a dirty word in our house. We're still waiting for our house to finished being built (January 12!) and the apartment is no fun right now. DS is sleeping terribly, has to have us in the room to go to sleep, and wakes 1 or 2 times a night. UGH. Last week I got my first ever call from daycare for a sick kid and it turned out he had a double ear infection. So, perhaps that started the sleep drama, but so far the meds are not fixing it. I asked the doctor what to do about his sleep, and she agreed with a few of you on here a few weeks ago - not worth it until we get to the hosue and the last transition. The worst part is that when he gets upset at night he screams, "Mommy come back to meeeeee" and ugh, that just does me in. That would be why it's easier to sleep train a non-talker! He is still napping and going down for naps like a champ, so at least there's that!

Other than sleep, he is SO fun. He loves to dance and sing and is loving Christmas music. He knows his colors and about 2/3 of his letters and speaks consistently in longer sentences. Baby #2 keeps baking away in there, I get another ultrasound at 26 weeks to double check my low lying placenta, so hopefully it will get with the program and move up some more!

Oh, and DCtoLow...my DS is also completely clueless about the coming baby. He'll point to my belly when you ask where the baby is and say, "hi baby" but that's it!

Pregnancy Ticker Lilypie Third Birthday tickers
  • DD will be 7 months on Wednesday and is generally just a happy, content little baby. She is so cute and her personality is really starting to emerge. She is very vocal and is really into blowing raspberries right now.

We started solids a few weeks ago and other than rice cereal, peas and carrots, she really seems to dislike everything else. I have to admit, I was a little surprised since all you hear about is how much kids love fruit and we've tried apples, banannas, pears and peaches and she hasn't like any of them.

She is still getting up once a night. The pedi at her 6 month appt gave us the green light to sleep train to get her through the night, but we just haven't started yet. Everytime I get to the point that we are going to start, she sleeps straight through until 5am or 5:30am. Which for her still isn't sleeping straight through since she will go back down until 7am or so, but I feel like it's pretty close.  That said, it is almost harder for me since I have to get up at 6:30am for work.

  • DS is totally into all things music right now.  I got him a little wooden guitar from a trip to Mexico a month or so ago and he is obsessed with it, and wants to take it everywhere.   We have been doing Gymboree classes for a while now and we have built up quite a few make-up classes so we decided to pick up a Gymboree Music class on Saturday afternoons and he is loving it.  He is such a little star in that class, he was doing repitition and duration by the second class, um he is only almost two!

Speaking of, my baby is almost two!  I can't believe it.  I have just started planning his party and this year we are doing a full out kiddo party where as last year was like 80% adults.  We are going the Gymboree route since we are already members so the cost isn't that outragous and then I don't have to deal with clean-up and whatnot.  He really likes trains (or choo choos) right now so we are going with that as a theme.  I have already created the invites and stuff with some cute clipart I bought off of Etsy, so I am very excited about all of that.  So any fun ideas for Train themed parties send them my way...Pinterest has been really helpful!

I am feeling better this week, still sad about losing my pregnancy but it is getting a little easier.  I go a few days and feel really good and then I'll let myself think about it and how right about now we would have been telling people and then I'll get all weepy again.  It is hard.  Just trying to focus on Hanukkah coming up and celebrating that, the New Year, and DS's bday and thinking of all those good things.
