Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Change in cycle because of recent misscarriage and/or IUD removal (paraguard)???

Just wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences...

I had my (paraguard brand) IUD removed at the beginning of August, and we were surprised (and so happy!) to find out that I was pregnant just two weeks later. The excitement was short-lived though, because I miscarried at the end of September.

I've had a very hard time finding information in any of my books, or online, about how exactly the physical recovery process is expected to go, after an early miscarriage... is it normal that my period did not return for about a month & 1/2, or that the length of my cycle seems to have changed?

For years before my first pregnancy & miscarriage, my cycle was very long: about 6 weeks instead of four. This was while using an IUD & previously the pill, & also while not using any contraceptives. I've just started my second period since the miscarriage, after only a 30 day cycle... much closer to normal! Is this a sign that my body may finally have reset itself back to normal, after everything its been through?

May sound strange but that's how it feels!

  • I have definitely heard your cycle can change pretty significantly following a m/c. Not sure how the IUD fits into all this since it shouldn't alter your cycle as it's non-hormonal (though you may find your periods are slightly shorter/lighter without the IUD). Sorry for your loss, but glad to hear your cycles sound like they're a good length now! Best of luck for when you decide to try again!

  • My understanding is that changes in your cycle are pretty normal after a miscarriage.  I am so sorry for your loss.
