Out of state baby shower question

My sister is throwing me a shower in the next few weeks out of state. Since it is too far to drive, DH and I will be flying back for it.

What do you think we should do regarding transporting items back. Should we bring an "extra" suitcase with us to check or should we just try to ship whatever doesn't fit in our carryons back home? I have tried to be good and not check (read: stalk.. LOL) my registry but my sister did mention that a few larger items were purchased.... Boppy pillow for one.

BIL is also throwing DH a diaper bowling party so we will have those items to bring home as well..

NOTE: Hopefully this doesn't come off as complaining or sounding ungrateful! We are blessed with very gracious and giving family/friends. The planner in me is just trying to figure logistics, and wondering if anyone else has thought about this??

TIA ladies!

Re: Out of state baby shower question

  • My best friend lives in Alaska, and came back here to Michigan for her shower.  She packed all of her and HH clothes into one carry-on bag.  (I know that one carry-on is REALLY small, but they didn't want to pay for extra baggage).  Then, on their way back, they had one carry-on, and two checked bags for gifts.  Depending on how long you'll be gone, it could work!  Good luck!

  • I think I would see what is cheaper:  bringing extra bags and checking them on the way home to fill up or shipping the gifts back home (at least for the larger items.)  In this case I would suggest taking a look at your registry to see what people have bought.

I had my shower today and one of our gifts was the pack and play.  That thing was HEAVY.  Shipping it would have cost a fortune!  I believe that most websites (at least Target and Babies R Us) list a weight in the item description.

  • This sounds horrible, but I am planning on returning and re-buying (back here) as many things as possible from our out of state shower.  It costs nothing to return, except maybe differing tax rates.  I expect to have to check a bag, but that would be 25 bucks each way - I really hope I don't have to ship on top of that!

  • I'm having an out of state shower, as well. I just asked the guests, if they're gifting something large or awkwardly shaped, to just ship it to the store near my home. Lots of stores have free store-to-store shipping, so I'm hoping we don't run into too many problems.

  • I had my out of state shower last weekend and we were faced with the same issue. We ended up renting a portable storage container to transport our shower gifts as well as some furniture and other miscellaneous things that were left at my mom's house when my husband and I moved from a house in OH to an apartment in CA 5 years ago. It was not cheap, but worth it now that we have a house in CA that can fit all of our belongings. • I am so glad you girls are having the same issue as me because I was having a mini-freakout on my sister lol.

What we ended up doing (although I shudder at the fact that I am doing this) is requesting that any larger gifts be sent to our house or closest store to us. As gifts arrive I'm going to open and take pictures of them and bring them with me to my shower and make a mini-album to have there so people can see their gifts and others can see what I got. It's not ideal nor what I like doing, but I just can't figure another way to do it.

  • In the same boat. Out of state. My SIL has advised everyone to purchase online that way it is shipped directly to my house. However, I will check two empty suitcases going so that in case, i have room to bring back. Oh I will have the "room" for 2 suitcases because my 10yr old daughter will travel with.  presents. I usually travel with just a carry-on for both my daughter and i.

I am a total planner also, you didnt sound ungrateful at ALL!! Its just so exciting!! Happy Monday!

  • I dont know what company you are flying with but I would start by looking at baggage fees vs. shipping cost. Some baggage fees can be rediculous. GL

  • Thanks ladies!! I figured I wasn't the only one who came across this issue. I will have to look at the baggage fees. We are flying Delta. I can only imagine that it won't be cheap to ship, and how on earth would I find a box to accommodate..

DH thought I was nuts by even asking. Silly boys... LOL

  • Could you work with your sister and see if some of the stuff can be shipped from her house? You could bring the smaller/easier to carry stuff back with you in your luggage and just ship everything else. My baby showers will both be local, so this isn't something I've ever thought about before. Good luck. I can sympathize with wanting to plan it out, I would be worried about the same thing! LOL! :-)
