May 2012 Moms

Opinions on this name please.

So I've always loved my mom's side of the family.  Her maiden name is Asper, and I was thinking it might make a neat first name for a girl.  I'm not sure if it's too out there, though.  I'm so used to the name that it seems normal to me, so I'd like all of your opinions.  Is it one of those, "Oh, I'm so sorry your mom named you that" kind of a name?

Oh, and my friend pointed out that my last name starts with an M, so her name would be "Asper M." or "a sperm" if you noticed.  Is that something that should deter me from the name?

Don't worry about hurting my feelings.  I really want to know what people think.

  • Hmm. Not so much.  How about AspeN?  Asper sounds like it's missing something.  If you must, maybe as a middle name??

  • It's not my style.  I think with that unusual of a name she'd go through her life spelling it and being misidentified as a boy.  How about using it as a middle name? Other nicknames that popped in my head, Aspirate, Aspartame, etc.

    This.

I must admit, I did laugh at the "a sperm" thing. Gotta be careful. Kids can be cruel!

Ha!  I didn't even think about those nickname possibilities.  Good point. Yeah, may have to go with a middle name or just not using it.  Thanks for pointing those out!

I like Aspera. It also might help with the gender mis-identification, Another thing to point out is the Twilight craze. One of the character's name is Jasper. I have a friend that actually named her kid after him. People might think that you did too, but tried to make it different. Idk, that's just where my mind went.

  • I studied Latin for a long time and I'm just going to point out that Asper tranlates to harsh, severe, cruel, etc. Asper itself is masculine.

Aspera can be either harsh, severe, cruel, etc. in the feminine OR it can mean harsh things, severe things, etc. in the neuter plural.

    Just something to consider.

It comes from the words ab + spes, so in general it means without hope, or any of the synonyms I put above.

  • Honestly, I am not feeling it. Maybe as a middle name?

But as PP have pointed out...I think of some horrible nicknames and the name just doesn't sound very professional to me. I love that it is a family name for you but I just don't see it as a fit for a first name.

  • I think it's a little too "odd" for a first name even though it really is not odd...it's just not a name you hear. I would love it as a middle name though!

  • I feel like others....that it is missing something such as a "J" or a "C" at the beginning. As a middle name....I say go for it. My neighbor used her maiden name as her first borns middle name....Magnuson. I think its a pretty common thing to do.

  • I don't know...the med student in me thinks of linea aspera.....

IMO the Latin Origin and meaning would be enough for me to nix this .....

  • I DEFINITELY think your child would meet with some bullying from the sperm comments.

Not sure what I think about the name itself, but just thought I'd say I think your friend is right.

Aspen is much cuter IMO!  I love Asper too but not with an M last name :(

  • Maybe its because I just had a conversation about it, but when I read this name my first thought was "Aspergers."Just thought I'd mention it.

I agree with PP that it could definitely work as a MN, but I also like the name Aspen as a FN!

  • I like Asper as a boys name not a girls name for some reason.

As far as kids making fun of it... kids are cruel. Let's face it, if they're not making fun of a name, they're making fun of height, weight, hair color, eye color, manner of speaking, clothes....

They'll always find something. I wouldn't let the mean kids throw me off of a name if I really liked it Wink

  • I honestly hate putting other people's baby names down.  But- I just want to remind you of Aspercreme.....you don't want this to be a nickname.  And I don't even know if they make it anymore- but kids could hear it from their parents and then they could be cruel.
