Pregnant after a Loss

4D ultrasound today showed cord around neck

DH and I went to a 4D imaging center this afternoon to see our baby girl. I'm 24 weeks along and we were hoping to see some clear shots of her. Everything looked great (minus the fact she had her feet and hands up to her face almost the entire time!)  until I noticed what looked like the cord near her neck.

I asked the u/s tech what that was and she confirmed "the umbilical cord". Of course, I started freaking out and asked her "is that normal"? She replied "I don't look for that kind of stuff". I understand that her job isn't to diagnose, but in that moment I was looking for some type of reassurance...

Needless to say I went home to research nuchal cords and have basically found this is very common. Upon closer inspection of the picture and videos, it looks more like the cord is slung across her neck over her shoulder, like a cross body bag. Even then, I'm scared.  I talked to a friend who is an OBGYN and she said this is totally normal. The baby is all over the place and at some point they'll have the cord wrapped around them but this doesn't pose a problem until delivery (and even then, babies come out OK).

Anyone else have a similar experience? I wanted the 4D u/s to be a great experience but I guess I've found that the more I know, the more I worry...

Re: 4D ultrasound today showed cord around neck

  • At 34 weeks is when my baby girl finally turned head down. At that appointment dr told me cord is around her neck but is very loose. I had an appointment again on Wednesday and cord was still loose around her neck. Dr. Stated that 50 percent all pregnancies cord is around neck sometime thoughout pregnancy. Dr. Said to continue to keep track movement and if notice change come to l & d. Dr. Also stated when I deliver they can easily slip cord off from around her neck reach in and undue it. So I am trying not to stress about it. If you have any questions you could always call your dr.

  • At our first 4D us at 28 weeks, I noticed that DS had his cord across his shoulder by his neck when we had left the office and I was looking at pictures. It scared me to death. But at our next us a couple of weeks later it wasn't near his neck. We had our us at the OB's office and they didn't even mention it. Your baby has probably already moved since the us, but I know it is stressful to see.

My DD was born with her cord around her neck. When she came out, my doctor said, "the cord is around her neck... loosely" He didn't seem concerned at all and probably threw in the loosely part so I wouldn't freak out. The cord didn't do anything to her while she was inside or while I was in labor/pushing.

I would just let your doctor know and see what they say, but there isn't much that you can do other than just track movement. This happens much more than people think. I'm sorry your ultrasound was scary.

    All of this - exactly.

  • My younger son was born with it a little tight around his neck so I asked the doctor if I needed to worry about this in future pregnancies and she said that nearly every baby has it wrapped around them somehow, so it's common and nothing to worry about.  I would still double check with your doctor of course, but I don't think if it's something to  e overly worried about.

  • I had a 3D/4D ultrasound yesterday and LO had his umbilical cord in front of his face the entire time.  It easily could slip around his neck, but like others have said, it happens often and moves around a lot in there.  The tech actually made a point to reassure me that it was in front of his face but nothing to worry about other then causing a shadow in the pictures.  She said she has seen LOs take their hand and move it away several times.  She even had me get up go pee and walk around a bit to see if it would move out of the way.  So I guess my point is, just because it's over his shoulder now, doesn't mean it will always be there.  It could already have moved at by now.  Hope you're feeling better about it.

  • I would be scared as well! But it sounds like everyone has given you peace of mind it's normal. Sounds like you went into the u/s for fun and walked out scared!
