How do I help her get over fear?

DD has decided she's terrified of the hair dryer and space heater, so if they're ever on while she's in the bathroom with me she freaks her freak.  I've tried holding her and telling her it's OK to be afraid and then moving closer to the objects while holding her, but she won't have it and starts bawling.  Any suggestions?  Or will she grow out of these fears and I just need to let it go for the time being?

  • Abby went through a phase like that. Dryers are actually pretty loud to a kids ears, especially in an enclosed space. You can try drying your hair in your bedroom with her in there where it's not so loud and she can get away from the noise.

Why do you have a space heater? My hair dryer makes my bathroom so hot that I have to open the window to cool it down in there!

  • We live in Indiana now and it's about 15 here in the mornings, so freezing cold.  I never have the hair dryer and the space heater running at the same time, but DD has decided she's afraid of both of them and the space heater is really quiet.

  • I think it will just take time. My DS was deathly afraid of my hairdyer and the vacuum for quite a while. It did take him at least a year or two to get over this but now it doesn't phase him at all.
