C-sections

C Section after Intestinal surgeries?

This is my first pregnancy so I'm learning, well ... everything ... as I go. I've had 4 intestinal surgeries. 3 hemmhoridectomies and a stapled hemmhoridectomy (excuse the spelling ... I have no idea how to spell them correctly!) My OB wants me to think about a scheduled C section so that I don't mess up what the surgeon has done. I go to see him on Dec 13th but I wonder if any of you ladies have had intestinal surgeries and what your thoughts are?

Re: C Section after Intestinal surgeries?

  • I've had a few abdominal surgeries and ended up with an emergency c-section (not related to the surgeries). If the risk of you ending up in an emergency situation is fairly high, I think it's worth considering it. An emergency c-section is not cool, trust me.

Are you able to speak again with the surgeon who did your intestinal surgeries to see what he/she thinks the risk factor is like? Your OB won't really know their side of it IMO.

  • I go see him on Dec 13th to discuss it with him. Depending on how the rest of the pregnancy goes, I may go back to see him in April or May (baby's due in June). I don't want to go through an emergency C section, but I had my heart set on a vaginal birth. However, if it's going to be a problem for either myself or for the baby, I will absolutely choose a C section. I just don't know how much pushing will affect what he's done.

Hopefully he's had experience with a patient or knows of a patient that has gone on to have a vaginal birth after similar surgeries. Otherwise I'm going to guess that the surgeon and your OB will err on the side of safety and encourage you to go with a c-section because it's difficult to predict how any birth will go and how it will affect you.

  • If you're all fixed up now, I sure wouldn't want to go through more intestinal surgeries with a young child if I were you, should a vaginal birth cause you more issues. I'm having a scheduled c-section due to my recent hip surgery and pre-existing pelvic conditions.

  • I have had my entire colon and rectum removed due to ulcerative colitis. My surgeon told me back then that if I wanted children I should never give birth vaginally or it could destroy all the work she has done. I had a scheduled c-section with my DS and will be having another on January 4th for this LO. I do not regret it one bit as I do not want to go through the pain associated with more intestinal issues/surgery.
