My 9 year old twins are developing boobs

Anyone have older girls that can relate to this?  I just noticed today that my two 9 year old have breast budding.  Their whole areolas are swollen and both said that they are sore.  Honestly I don't remember having this until I was around 12, and my period came about 6months later.  I just think this is super early for this.  I'm not ready for my girls to be going through puberty, I really though I had at least two more years before this happens.  Can anyone relate to this?  What does this mean?

  • Not to scare you, but my period came at 9 and boobs weren't far behind.

  • I believe a lot of the research/theories about the hormones in dairy causing early puberty. I know that when I have any non-organic dairy it has an impact on my body/hormones. I break out overnight after just a bowl of cereal of regular milk. Before I made the switch to organic dairy and was eating regular daily, I had lots of issues with my cycles.

  • I "had" to wear a sports/training bra at basketball at 9, and my period came at 11.  Sometimes girls go through things in longer stages -- I wouldn't freak out just yet!

Other than having to wear the bra, I have no memories of my boobs coming in.  As far as I'm concerned they've always been here, lol.

  • I had breasts at 9 following a growth spurt and had my period on my 10th birthday. I also remember starting to need deodorant around that time as well.

I suggest talking with them about their bodies and making sure they aren't embarrassed about it, I remember being painfully aware that I was different and being teased by the other girls because of my early development.

  • Well, DH and I had the "talk" with them already and I am soooo glad we did.  I thought that it was the right time with mommy having a baby.  I remember getting sore nipples and budding at 12ish and getting my period shortly after my 13th birthday.  I don't see my girls being physically mature since they are very petite and short and very althetic.  They do soccer and ballet and have been very physically active for 3 years.  I just saw them more as "late" bloomers and not early.  I guess I just assumed that overly athletic girls would get puberty later than most....that's just a bad assumption on my part.  (I am NOT saying that girls who have or had their period at a young age are bigger over weight people).

  • I've always been super petite and got my period at 11. (It might have been 10 actually... hmm... those ages mix up for me.) Anyway, boobs never really came until years later and they were always tiny until pregnancy ha. Hopefully their potential breasts aren't an indication of an impending period. It sucks to have it so young!

  • (((Hugs)))  Not that we arent expecting it to happen but sad to see your babiess change to not babies.  Several friends that i know who have children the same age just went through this with their girls in the 4th grade.  Started their period then too.  I was 12 but I remember needing to wear a training bra in 4th grade.  I hope the transition goes well for you!  My daughter who is 4 has been praying to not get bigger so she doesnt have to get shots.  She says no kindergarten for her.  Maybe I should start praying for that too!  LOL

  • I definitely had it before my period.. maybe 10 or 11?  I got my period a couple of weeks before my 12th birthday. I feel like everything else was already well on its way to developing before then. Like.. hair and stuff. Not to freak you out any more. lol

I hope not too!  I just don't think they are ready for big changes like that just yet.  I think I'm still in shock to find that it's starting.

Yeah I'm barely 5'0 and was always very active as a child. It was odd because both my mother and my sister were late bloomers, my sister and I got our periods around the same time and she is 5 years older than me.

  • I had boobs a couple years before I got my period at 12. My niece (13 now) was 10 when she started her period. I think they attribute it to hormones in our food like a PP said. We try very hard to buy hormone-free meat and always buy hormone-free milk.

Ah I forgot about meat! All of our meat comes from my parents' ranch so we know what's in it and I haven't thought about grocery store meat in forever. Glad I'm not the only crazy one that believes the theories ;)

I do too...and I believe soy to be a culprit as well. Our food supply is really polluted. Sorry to hijack the post OP.  I was a painfully late bloomer. I hope DD is average when it comes to these things.

  • My boobs started budding at 9 (4th grade).  I got my period about 2 years later.  Buy them a training bra now.  It will save them from being teased by boys.  I had became so conscious about my boobs because two boys kept asking me about them and I never forgot about those two boys.  They also sat in front of me and I would see them sharing their playboy mags when the teacher wasn't looking.  It freaked me out and I didn't know who to talk to at the time.  I was embarrassed about my chest (even til now that I'm 30 years old).

  • Thanks to everyone for sharing their personal experiences and insight.  I also believe that hormones do have something to do with it, we drink whatever milk is on sale (horrible I know).  I feel a little better and I was just really surprised both of them didn't tell me about what was going on with it.  When I asked them why they didn't tell me they said it was because I already told them about it and it didn't alarm them to tell me.  I guess I should be a little more accepting of it, it was bound to happen, part of raising girls:)  Me and my hubby just say....bring it on!

  • I remember my boobs starting to grow around 9... period came around 11. It was a slow process of boob grow-age though. Heck, I'll still praying for B's! Try not to worry, though. Your girls have eachother which should make the process easier. I lived in a house with all guys >.> LOL

  • I think that started for me in 5th grade, so if they're 9 they not too early, right?  I didn't get my first period until I was 12.5, so you may still have some time for that.  there were definitely a few girls that developed before me and some that developed after too.

  • I definitely believe it is all of the hormones in our food that is causing young girls to enter puberty earlier and earlier. My best friend works with a woman whose daughter started puberty super early. She brought her to the doctor and they basically said she could switch to an organic diet or give her hormone therapy to slow it down.

  • I started wearing a training bra when I was 9 (third grade).  I got my period the summer after 4th.  It might be time for some shopping!

  • I'm still waiting for my boobs to come in but I got my period at 11. I'm also very petite and was very athletic. The whole hormones in our food thing freaks me out. It won't be a problem with Adelynn, she won't get a period or start developing until we start her estrogen therapy (would it be wrong to delay that until she's 16?) but I worry about this little one. I really wish organic milk was more affordable.

  • I teach 4th grade and I have 3 girls in my class who are developing (and wear training bras; they all told me all about bra shopping with their moms..hehe).  Last year, I had to speak to one parent about getting her daugther camis or training bras because the boys were noticing (she started her period about a month ago, she's in 5th grade now).   It seems like a lot of girls are developing earlier but when I talked to my mom about it she told me that she had to buy me training bras around the end of 4th grade (I would have been 9 years old).
  • i was a C cup by fifth grade, but I didn't get my period until the summer after 6th grade. It seems like girls are developing earlier these days. I work in a middle school and most of the girl are pretty well developed by sixth grade, and most of them already have their periods.

  • There's some research that suggests the hormones in dairy and meat can cause early onset of puberty in girls. It might be a bit late now, but it probably wouldn't hurt if you switched to organic, no-hormone milk if your girls drink a lot of it and you drink regular milk now.

All of this! All the hormones and chemicals in our food products that we buy in the store are actually pretty scary! If you start doing your research on everything it's hard to buy food products that haven't had something done to them!

  • i got my period when i was 12.
i don't remember having actual boobs until i was like, 14 (but i was a chubby kid, so maybe it just took a little longer for me to notice them).

i was definitely a late bloomer.

two of my former co-worker's daughters had boobs and periods by 11 or so. i think that some of the early blooming has to do with better nutrition (but yeah, there's probably some food hormones factored in as well).

  • My boobs came this early, which wasnt a big deal to me. But getting my period at 9 was devestating to me. I look back at my dramatics and laugh, but to me it was the most embarrassing thing in the world to get my period...I guess cuz I was the first of anyone I knew.

Be prepared for this, it can be hard so young.

I think it's a lottery, really. I was EXTREMELY thin and athletic (dance/gymnastics from 4- 12, and soccer/softball/basketball from 10- 14), and I was a late bloomer, getting my period right before 13. However, my sister was much the same as me, and was 11. Our mom on the other hand was barely 10. So I'm not really sure what determines it.

An extra hug for you though; it's got to be hard seeing your little girls grow up. Just remember that you're doing a fantastic job with them; kudos to you for educating your girls now! I really think that girls who are taught about sex/body changes around this age are more likely to come to you with questions and make smarter decisions later. Hugs!
