Q about not ovulating

If you don't ovulate one month, how long does your cycle usually last? My cycles are about 30 days, and I ovulate around the 18th. I didn't ovulate this month and I am on day 40 of my cycle. (I am 100% sure I'm not pregnant.) I won't have my period until I ovulate, right? So will this be like a double cycle, lasting about 60 days, or is there no way to guess when I'll get my period?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I've never had a cycle like this. I asked my family dr today when I went in to get tested for strep and all he could tell me was, "Are you sure you're not pg?" So at the risk of being flamed, I figured someone here might have some expereince with this. Thanks.

Re: Q about not ovulating

  • The length of an anovulatory cycle can vary.  You can still have bleeding (though not technically your period) even if you don't ovulate.  Are you charting?

  • there's no way to tell for sure. i went 30 days, 41, 28, then 61 day cycle. i got a +hpt on cd 49 when i got pregnant.
  • Yeah it can really vary. It can be normal length and anovulatory, or ridiculously long and anovulatory. Sometimes the sign of an anovulatory cycle is really erratic temps- are you charting at all? Otherwise, there is no way to know if a cycle is going to be anovulatory until it ends, either with AF or a BFP.

Oh and technically the bleeding that ends an anovulatory cycle isn't technically your period, it's breakthrough bleeding. A period is what occurs after you ovulate (unless you get pg).

  • I was charting but I decided to take the month off from temping because my O dates have been so consistent with physical symptoms and positive OPKs. (So, of course this is the month where I really needed to see what my temps were, and I don't have any.) I did chart OPKs and cervical fluid, so I am fairly certain that I didn't O. I had a stomach bug the week I should have O'd, and now I am sick with a respiratory infacetion, so that might be the cause.
