Frequency of bowel movements?

Any thoughts on frequency of bowel movements?  My four year old DS used to go every day or so, but for the past two weeks he is going sometimes two to three days between movements - he doesn't seem constipated or anything, no dietary changes or other factors I can think of....should I be worried?  We never give fruit juice, but I just started giving him apple juice to try to get him more regular (course now I know about the arsenic thing thanks to you laides) - any thoughts on what else I could add to his diet to make him a little more regular?

Re: Frequency of bowel movements?

  • Ds typically poops twice per day (am and pm). He eats a good diet with lots of veggies, drinks plenty of water, takes a daily probiotic and gets lots of exercise. That seems to keep things moving for him. Pears and prunes make him go more frequently so you might try those. Also, the probiotic can help with regularity and good gut bacteria.

  • My DD goes 1-2x a day.  She has fruits and veggies every day, but she has always had constipation issues, and stuff like bananas, rice, and dairy definitely get her stopped up, fast.  I give her pedialax gummies every single day - otherwise we run into problems.  If anything, it can't hurt - fiber is good!

  • My boys are super poopers so I'm probably not much help, they each poop 2-3 times a day and it was worse when they still wore diapers.  I've always been jealous of the every few day poopers Smile.

Speaking for myself, I struggle with constipation and I know that sometimes it can take me a couple weeks before I really realize it and by  the time it getting hard to get it out things are really bad.  Basically it gets really bad really fast.  Just based upon that I would try to help him along and see if you can get him back to every other day at least.

  • My 3 year old DS generally poops every other day. Occassionally 2 days go without a poop, occassionally he poops 2 days in a row. His poops are enormous and have clogged our toilets at times! But he has no problem pooping, so it's all good!
