Do you speak British? Feisty?

If the British says, "Blimey, Danny. You do pull them out, son." what would the American be???

"Woah, Danny. You........"

The context is a dad talking to his son. His son (Danny) has just told him a crazy story about finding a missing movie star living in the shed behind his grandma's house.

Dear Bump: You suck.

I am by no means 100% fluent, but I get by.

My translation would be "Woah, Danny.  You do pull them out [of your ass], son."  As in, Danny is telling big, fat lies.

  • Alternatively, "Woah, Danny.  You do find yourself in the most crazy situations, son." As in, Danny is prone to stepping into unusual situations.  But I'd still go with my first guess.

    Want me to ask DH?

  • sh!t. I didn't even type it right. It's "You do pull them, son." No "out."

Would that be like, "you pull people's legs?"

No, no need to bother your DH. I'll just make something up.

    Crazy Brits!!

  • Given the context, I would think either "you're pulling my leg" or something along the lines of the crazies "coming out of the wood work" around the son.

Disclaimer- I no longer speak fluent British.

Now I have to know, what are you translating?  :)

  • So "pulling" is like going out to bars & hooking up with someone, but I'm guessing from the context that's not the case here.  I'd still go with option #1.

  • My current project is one in which we bought a series of British leveled readers (leveled for grades 3-5) and are "translating" them into American English and creating teacher's guides to go with them.

I went with, "Woah, Danny. That's quite a story."

    My brain is translation-mush.

I would LOVE to change this to, "Woah, Danny. You do hook up with sluts a lot."

And that would be a perfectly acceptable translation if this were a certain kind of book.

Depending on the age of Danny, I'd actually go for this one. I mean, if he's 8, not appropriate. But, if he's 15 or so, then yeah, this is something that a dad would say to his kid, joking.

Yeah, he's 8. And I can't even mention things like hotels having minibars, so I'm preeety sure sluts are off limits.

    I feel so censored.
