Baby Names

How mean would I be????/

So, I am not that far along but of course we are discussing names.

Boy name is set, combination of family names and not negotiable.

For a girl....first name has not been determined but it definitely will be feminine and a classic girl name....How mean would I be if the MN was a definite "boy's" name???

TIA

Re: How mean would I be????/

  • I really don't think middle names matter that much, so I don't think it would be "mean" at all.

  • Brent.  There is some meaning behind it, but not a family name.

  • I think anything goes for middle names since most people don't use their middle name.  If you like it, then use it.

  • i hear a lot of people using James as a MN for girls lately

If it's Katherine Brent LastName?  Sure.

If it's Riley Brent LastName?  No.

This.  Totally fine IMO unless the first name is gender-ambiguous.

  • Brent would be kinda mean.

  • I wouldnt use it but how about something that means the same thing?  Brent means "hill" and so does Bryn.  I would use Bryn as a middle name in honor of the person.  Like

    Catherine Bryn

  • I was writing about this in a blog post today, mix and match combos. Most often the boy name gets put as the FN on girls, but if a girl name is used on a boy then its usually as a MN. So for both girls and boys you most often still end up seeing boy name + girl name no matter which gender. I think your daughter would have less confusion over her name for sure if you had a girl name + boy name as a MN. I don't see anything wrong with that and if it has meaning I'd definitely do it.
  • I give a lot more leeway with middle names, especially if they have a meaning.

  • I think it's fine. My name is "Keri Michael Marie" and no one really cares about the Michael part. It hasn't been a big deal and I like it.

This, for a long time I thought I would use my maiden name which has a male undertone.  If the name means something to you, I would go for it.  Its not like ppl would call her by that.

  • depends on the name I guess
  • I think Brent is fine for a MN.  The mom of one of my childhood friends was Mary Brent. I always thought it was lovely.

  • I think if the first name is unambiguously feminine you are absolutely fine.

I've considered the idea of using Drew as a middle name for a girl, after a friend. I don't think DH would go for it, but I like it, myself.

  • The first name needs to be VERY feminine, not one of those unisex names.
