Constipation-please help ladies!!!!

1.  So how do you get your recommended calcium intake and not be constipated????  My doctor doesn't like calcium supplements and wants me getting calcium through food and drink, but now I'm constipated.  What are you doing for calcium?

2.  How are you relieving constipation?

  • I don't drink milk or eat much dairy, so I've been drinking OJ fortified with calcium - Simply Orange, no added sugars or anything.  And, luckily, no issues with constipation for me.  Thank goodness!

  • I eat a ton of dairy, so it's not a concern for me. But if you're trying to lay off the dairy, increase your intake of calcium-rich foods like broccoli, kale, figs, hummus, and tofu.

For constipation, drink LOTS of water (most important). You can take 100 mg of Colace (docusate) twice a day (pregnancy safe). If you're really stopped up, a dose of 30 mL of milk of magnesia should help. For extra oomph, mix it with a few ounces of prune juice (we call this lovely concoction a "brown cow" at my hospital).  Try to avoid stimulant laxatives during pregnancy, as they can cause painful cramping.

  • I'm taking the calcium chews. Gotta drink tons of water and try to get your fruits and veggies in. Even an apple a day and a 1/2 cup of coffee helps me.

  • Coffee, coffee, and coffee
  • 1) I drink a lot of milk and eat a lot of cottage cheese and calcium rich veggies. Calcium doesn't make me constipated though. Iron does.

    2) I exercise. Works every time.

    1. I get in milk with every meal (cereal is a yummy snack with milk) and I love cheese. I've had absolutely no interest in yogurt since getting pregnant.
    2. My dr recommended Colace as well, along with plenty of water, fruits and veggies, and 30 minute walks daily. I don't do those consistently and pay the penalty.

    Good luck!

  • 2 glasses of warm prune juice works like a charm! I even heard pear juice works too.. Senokot works too and its on the safe medicine list... Good luck, i've been battling it thru the entire pregnancy too!!

  • I have cereal as a snack at lease once a day and eat so much cheese on things that I'm not too worried about calcium.

For constipation, fiber gummies have been a life saver for me.  I drinks TONS of water and take two gummies after lunch and dinner and it works better for me than colace or prune juice did.  And they don't taste bad at all :)

The first ingredient in Fiber One Bars is Chicory Root Extract, which according to my MD can cause premature labor.

I was taking Colace and Miralax, but they caused me to have abdominal cramping, drinking prune juice every other day has worked the best!
