Bf medicine

Has anyone used reglan to help with bfing supply issues. Over the last two weeks my supply has tanked and gone to pretty much nothing and that is with pumping at least three times and nursing three. DD is eight months almost but I really want to continue ( have had to supplement since 2mo). I called and asked and my obgyn just prescribed reglan to help bring the milk back.  I am reading about it online and it can have some serious side affected though so i am trying to weigh the pros and cons for trying it. Anyone use it? Any success? Any effects?

 Please let me know!!

Re: Bf medicine

  • I've used fenugreek really successfully pretty recently.  I ordered it online, so it was pretty cheap.  You are more than welcomed to borrow it if you'd like - I have a huge bottle.

  • If you've made it 8 months, you've already done really well. Seriously. I think if you're concerned about the side effects of Reglan, it might be worth it to just call it a day with the nursing.

I started Geneva on formula a couple times a day at 9 months and she was wholly on to milk by 11 months - to no ill effect. Again, you've done a fabulous job getting to 8 months.Would it really be worth the risk of side effects?

    Just my two cents.

  • Hi Susan,

Have been through an entire bottle of fenugreek in the last ten days! I smell like male syrup!!

Thanks Myra for your encouragement! That is why I am up in the air about it. She had already had formula some for quite awhile now and been fine. It's really the winter I wanted to get through. I think I might try it for a week and see what happens.y doctor knows I have a history of pp depression so I don't think he would have given it to me in a high dose or if he was worried.  I would still like to find out if anyone has had an experience with it

  • By the way, Myra, I love that you chose the name Cecil!! I Know a Cecil and he is a great guy!
  • Mine started tanking at 8 or 9 mos with both kids.  Unfortunately, my kids also both lost interest in nursing right around that time as well so that's when I had to wean.  I was pretty bummed this time especially.  But if your LO is still interested in nursing, why not just keep up with what you can and supplement the rest.  My pedi always advised me that this just made our BF sessions like a highly nutritious snack :-)  It was the best of both worlds.  At 8 mos, I wouldn't take anything to increase my supply... especially if there were side effects.  That's just me.

  • With both of my kids, my supply also tanked right around the 8-9mo mark and my pedi said sooo many of his moms have the same problem around 8mo. I didnt supplement because I am stubborn and instead I nursed/pumped a zillion times a day. I am not recommending that, do what is best for you! My supply did rebound after about 2 weeks with both kids. I was really conscious to drink a TON of water and have lots of snacks during the day etc. FWIW, I also wouldnt take something with side effects at this point but I understand wanting to not have regrets about stopping BF. Good Luck! I hope your supply rebounds!

  • Just an update, have been on Reglan for two days (only taking two out of the four recommended pills) and my supply has definitely gotten better. So far no symptoms but I know what to look for and so does DH in case I start to get depressed. It's a medicine that is not recommended to take longer then 12 weeks so I'm going to take it one day at a time and see and slowly wean off as we approach the twelve month mark. I can say, it's helping her want to nurse again as I'm not empty so she's not getting frustrated!
