2nd Trimester

diet soda!!

it's the only thing i almost need to drink that i really shouldn't have...btw the nausea and always being thirsty ....it just is calling my name all the time...and if i don't have it i sort of can't DEAL!

don't get me wrong, i try to drink it in moderation ...i mean i drank it with my last pregnancy and my daughter seems A -OK!

anyone else drinking diet soda with me?  or breaking some of the food rules?

Re: diet soda!!

  • Diet Coke, and 60-120mg of caffeine a day. I sometimes forget my prenatals, too.
  • Loading the player...
  • I switched to regular sodas. Since us twin mommies need so many additional calories I don't really feel guilty about the extra. However, I only have 2-3 sodas a week and that's mainly ginger ale for nausea.
  • I abstained from soda and coffee during my first tri, now I'm drinking 1/4 of what I used to before I was pregnant - which was probably too much of it anyhow.  I also won't have soda on days that I've had coffee and vice-versa.  I found that my heart races when I have both on the same day but as soon as I stopped doing that, the racing stopped.

I've been eating lunch meat most work days and tuna once a week.

Other than that, I've stuck to "the rules"

  • I've been having about 1/2 glass a day and I feel so guilty about it! I try to stop, but I need that little bit of caffeine and coffee and tea have too much caffeine. I had given it up completely, but then I started getting headaches and the midwife said she'd rather I have a little caffeine than tylenol, if the caffeine does the trick.

  • Real bad about prenatals. I took them well until I was 12 weeks along. Now I don't really...try to eat Raisin Bran as often as possible though.
  • i eat turkey sometimes too....!!

  • I have drank diet soda throughout my pg's.  If it is in moderation you are fine!

  • i drink diet soda but more then not i go for caffiene free unless i have a big day and feel like i need it. i broke more rules the first time around bc i honestly didnt know them and my son turned out just fine. alot of people say everything is fine in moderation. i know i ate a bunch of cold lunch meat the first time around. the only thing i wont risk the moderation on is alcohol i can live without that one glass of wine a week. and i dont eat seafood or sushi just bc i dont like it.

  • I was real good about not drinking diet coke during the first trimester, I was trying to stay away from artificial sugars. I tried having one cup of coffee a day and it would make me be sick everytime I drank it, so I switched to chai tea. Then the chai tea started making me sick so I switched to plain old black tea and that made me be sick. Now I'm back on the diet coke (a can or two a day)... it gives me a boost and actually doesnt make me ill, even on an empty stomach.
I've been real good about not eating anything else on the unapproved list. So hopefully the diet soda won't make too much of a difference.

  • Why wouldn't you drink diet soda?  I asked my doctor and she said the fake sugar is totally safe, it's only the caffeine that's an issue in the first tri.  1-2 cans a day in the first tri is what she told me and more is fine after that, but I generally stick to that anyway so I'm not up all night.

  • I gave it up in firat trimester, but started using it not longer after i got into the 2nd trimester. I drink one diet soda a day. Diet Soda does not have much caffeine per serving so I was not worried about that, but I do try to stay away from the artificial sweetners. I don't think one a day is going to hurt anything :)

  • Uh huh.  I drink diet soda.  I also eat sushi (but only if the fish has been frozen first.)  I also eat soft cheeses made from pastuerized milk, deli meats, and soft-serve.  And, I can usually beg a sip or two of beer from DH once every few weeks.

  • I've switched to regular. There are a few studies linking diet soda and preterm labor. Since I had DD at 35 weeks, I'm not taking any chances. As to the caffenine, I'm not concerned.

  • Immediately after my BFP I bought all regular cokes to stay away from artificial sweeteners and had maybe 1 every week or two....then switched back to a diet every week or two...then successfully gave it up for the rest of the first tri, and now in second tri I have a few a week.....in fact last night it kind of took the place of alcohol which was what I REALLY wanted after a stressful day at work; I had DH go get me a giant diet coke with crushed ice. I drank about half which was more than I wanted to allow myself, but it was the first time since Sunday so I didn't feel too bad.

I've stayed away from lunch meat, I have had soft serve a few times, until the last time it tasted funny, and I totally freaked out and have felt guilty ever since.  OH I have been eating cesear salad....honestly I'm so used to ordering it I keep forgetting Embarrassed  everything else I've been good about....guess that doesn't leave too much lol

  • I avoid aspertame in 1st tri, just as a personal precaution but once I hit 2nd tri I have it in moderation :) I'm pretty easy going about everything after 1st tri though.

  • i gave up diet and started drink regular, but its a drag.  I miss diet coke a lot! I moderate my caffiene intake.  I gave it up all together for the first 2 months, then said oh 150mg or less is ok. I am pretty okay other than that.  I have had lunch meat once or twice and a few chili cheese dogs.  And twice i have had a glass of wine.  :-)

giving up foods and booze has been hard but...

giving up smoking was the worse but i have been smoke free since August 21st when we found out we were preggo

  • I drink diet soda. (usually root beer). I drink real coffee in the morning. I have a small glass of wine here and there. I eat lunch meat, cold.
  • Yes, I drink diet coke or coke zero just about every day. I try to keep it to a can or so a day, but sometimes more. I was a bit more careful about it in first tri, but honestly, it's just not something I'm very concerned about and neither is my doctor. I drank diet soda my whole pregnancy with my daughter and she is A-ok.

The artificial sweeteners in most soft drinks (not saccharine, but aspartame and others) are some of the most tested substances on the planet and have never been conclusively shown to cause any harm to anyone whatsoever, especially not in the doses most people would consume. I personally see no reason to eliminate them. I have very few vices...have had maybe 2 oz total of wine this whole pregnancy, don't drink coffee, etc, so I don't think a diet soda or two is anything to get worked up about. If you feel differently, great, don't drink them!

    what's wrong with soft-serve?

also, i'm drinking a caffeine-free diet coke right this very second.

  • Its not the caffeine I worry about in diet soda, its the artificial sweetener. It's not good for you in general, so Ive tried to drink regular instead since becoming pregnant. Even though I miss the diet soda and like the taste of it more. And I'm not worrying about the extra calories... as long as you eat pretty healthy besides the soda its fine.
