Babies: 0 - 3 Months

95th percentile for height and weight

That's what the doc told us today. He wasn't overly concerned today but said if it continues he would be worried. He also told us she should be sleeping through the night and skipping all night feedings.

I feel like a total failure as a mom today...

Re: 95th percentile for height and weight

  • what is her weight and height?

  • Don't feel like a failure!  From what I have seen on here there are tons of babies that don't sttn at your dd's age!

Also, I dont' get percentiles.  Would someone explain this to me?  I thought higher numbers were good...I guess I never paid attention.

  • Um, why?  Why is your pedi worried about the %s?  Why does he want her to sleep through the night?  I'm highly confused....DS was in 95/97th % for weight and height since he was your daughter's age, he will be 2 in 2 weeks (so we will see what he is now) but he has always been perfectly proportioned and growing at HIS own pace.  I have never once had a pedi say he was worried.

  • Why would he be concerned?  My DD is off the charts for wright (105th) and 85th for height, and my doc is pleased.

  • Sounds like your pedi is the one who is a failure. ?Your babe is THRIVING- how is that a bad thing?

STTN is not a milestone that is specific to any particular month. ?Your DD will STTN when she is ready.

  • ditto pp re: STTN, a lot of babies don't.

also, DS was in some of the lowest percentiles and his pedi told me he was starving -- i changed drs.  At some point i have to say that, although supplementing is probably a good idea to help him catch up he's not starving and as his mother i know...he's happy, hitting his milestones (at actual, not adjusted age), etc etc.

every parent has to make their own choices, but one thing i think for sure is that NO pedi should make a parent feel like a failure...

  • What? My ds is in the 97th for height and 90th for weight. And ....believe you me, he is not anywhere near sttn. He just had his 4 month appt and the pedi wasn't remotely concerned.

  • DD is off the charts for weight and only recently started to catch up to her weight in length (ie, she was short and fat before, now she's big in all directions). Pedi wasn't concerned in the least as long as her growth was consistent. don't worry about this. it sounds like your baby is nice and healthy!

and there's no set age for STTN!

  • My dd was 99% percentile for height, weight and head circ. at her 4 mo appt and the doctor patted me on the back and said, "Good Job, Mom".  She eats 2-3 times a night, still.

  • I know you are all right. I know it's totally irrational and she's doing great and will mature at her own rate but I just feel frustrated. DD wakes up a million times ?a night and is horrible napper. I'm tired, DH is tired, DD is tired.

Again, I know it's stupid and she's totally thriving but I feel like I'm doing something wrong with feeding her. I feed on demand which totals about 40oz/day. Pedi's face dropped when I told him how much she eats. This is in addition to a little rice cereal and banana.?

He gave me papers on how to sleep train...total CIO. I'm totally against it and won't do it. ?

  • I'm sorry your pediatrician is an a-hole. Our daughter is in the 97th percentile for both height and weight and our pedi gave us glowing reviews. In fact, she said "keep up the good work!" DD does not STTN, she also wakes up (once) to feed.
  • You might want to consider changing pedis.  I agree with previous posters, i your DD is healthy and beautiful.  You are doing a great job with her.
  • Maybe he's concerned about the rate that she's gaining not so much where she is right now. She's 26 inches and 18.5lb.

When it comes to parenting, there are ideas that we disagree on. As a medical doctor he just saw my daughter though a scary hospital stay and diagnosed her instantly. Grr...I've been through a bunch of pedi's already. For some reason I just don't love any of them.

  • I would not worry about what your pedi says. For the first 7 months of DS's life, he was 90-95th percentile for weight and height. They start to slow down in their growth as they approach 9 mos - a year old. At his 9 month appt, he was still 90th percentile for weight but 75th for height. I take it all with a grain of salt. My DS was almost 11 lbs at birth, so he's always been a little ahead of the game when it comes to weight.

And for what it's worth, DS stopped sleeping through the night at about 6 mos and still gets up anywhere from 1-5 times a night for his pacifier - I don't feel comfortable with CIO, so I keep giving it to him.

  • My niece is 10 months old and has been in the 90th-95th percentile for months and months now. Her Pedi never seemed concerned?

  • I'm sorry! I'm not sure what I would do in that situation (about changing Dr's.) It sounds like he really helped you through a tough time. A lot of moms on here have big DC's and they are seen as healthy by the Dr.

DS is not quite 4 months yet and he is at least 27 inches and about 20 lbs. (He is at the top of the charts.) My Dr. is "impressed" with his growth and said I have super breastmilk! She hasn't given me any issues with DS not sleeping through the night. Sure, some kids will STTN earlier than others and that is okay. GL and I hope you feel better soon!
