Dirty diaper question

Okay so for the first few days home DD was dirty basically every other diaper. I know it is supposed to change, going from green to yellow. Now it seems as though it has slowed way down. Like now it is once every 24 hours, or longer. How much time should there be between each bowel movement? I'm just worried she is stopped up or something.

Re: Dirty diaper question

  • Is she breast or bottle fed? I think it's different for both.

  • This is likely very normal. Doctors say that even breastfed babies don't have to poop every day. As long as she doesn't seem to be in any pain, she is ok. If you have the feeling that her tummy hurts and she hasn't pooped in a while then it might be worth calling the doctor.

My kids both had constipation issues, Devyn from very early on and we were told to use Fleet Babylax liquid suppositories when needed. I think he was already three month old though, I would have to check back in my baby book and on the boxes of the Fleet what the age says

  • DD was mostly breastfed the first few weeks and she probably only poo'd once every few days. If it got to be more than 4 days, i'd take her temp. That usually stimulated things. If you take this route, make sure to hold the diaper up while taking the temp, cause it can happen quick. When I asked the Doc if this was normal at her 2 week appt, he said yes.

  • DS was BFed only and that was pretty typical.  The first few days, were pretty regular, but after that I freaked out too, but our pedi assured us it was normal.  He would sometimes go once every other day.  I did notice that he would go less frequently the more dairy I ate.

  • Are you breastfeeding??  If so it sounds totally normal.  In the beginning DD pooped almost at every feeding but that tapered off very quickly to a few times a day and then only once a day.  Now DD is almost 4 months old and she goes every other day or every third day.

  • Ditto everyone else - BF shouldn't poop much at all, my FF baby pooped ~3-4x a day until we introduced solids. She's pooped once a day at approx. the same time since she was 8 months old.

  • There's a wide range of "normal" so it sounds like she's fine! Especially if she doesn't seem to be in pain or anything.

DS was BF&FF together and for the first couple weeks he pooped 6+ times a day, but it tapered off. Now it's once a day or once every other day.

  • Ditto PPs. I don't know how old your LO is, but if your LO is BF'd then it may be a while. I believe that you don't need to worry as long as it's been less than 10 days it's fine. I believe it's not even really a "problem" until you hit the 14 day mark. BM is that well digested.

"Dirty diapers: Expect 3-4+ stools daily that are the size of a US quarter (2.5 cm) or larger. Some babies stool every time they nurse, or even more often--this is normal, too. The normal stool of a breastfed baby is yellow and loose (soft to runny) and may be seedy or curdy. After 4 - 6 weeks, some babies stool less frequently, with stools as infrequent as one every 7-10 days. As long as baby is gaining well, this is normal."
