Cloth Diapering

Need help with NB diapers

I want to start cloth as soon as we bring P home from the hospital but don't know where to start with the NB sizes and types.  I also don't want to buy too many and would prefer used if possible.  I'm open to anything, I just don't want to invest a ton of money in something he'll wear for a couple months.  Any suggestions on what to do/what to buy?

Re: Need help with NB diapers

  • I'm going with newborn prefolds and some XS covers for the first few weeks/couple of months.  The thing with cloth is that you CAN resell everything and really get quite a good amount of your money back on it.  Or you can keep them and use them for doublers or whatever later (or another child if you're planning on another someday).

I got enough prefolds and covers for twins for about $150, so you could halve that and be ok for a singleton.  Oh, and I really considered getting GMD prefolds because of the great reviews, but in the end went with Imagine prefolds from Nickis Diapers because they were almost half the price and you really only use them as primary diapers for a bit.

    Good luck!

  • My newborn stash is 18 newborn sized diaper rite prefolds, 4 bumgenius newborn, 4 grovia newborn, a snappi, and 2 diaper covers.  I hit the Black Friday sales HARD and got all of the above for $130 total.  I'll use these until the BG 4.0 stash fits (hopefully).  Then I will keep the prefolds as added absorbency, or burp cloths, etc.  I wasn't going to buy newborn sized stuff but my rationale was that I would likely spend more than $130 to disposable diaper a baby until those 4.0s fit - I plan to sell them off or pass down the newborn all in ones to a friend after I get the use out of them.
  • I too am tempted to begin cloth diapering exclusively when we bring Kate home at the end of December.  However....it might be wise to give yourself some cushion.  Just my opinion.

I bought 1 package of sposies and I hear the hospital I'll be delivering at gives out enough diapers to last 1-3 weeks so we are CDing part time when she gets home until the sposies run out or she goes up a size.  With this in mind, I bought 2 Thirsties covers (NB) and 12 Diaper Rite prefolds in NB size.  I figured if I HAD to have more prefolds I could make the smalls work until I could do laundry by folding them over in the front.  I bought 12 Diaper Rite prefolds in small as well.  (I'll be buying more at that point I'm sure but I also have 8 pocket dipes to go with these).

By the time she is in Small prefolds, I will have 3 small Thirsties covers, 12+ DR prefolds, and 8 pocket dipes as mentioned above (a combo of 4 Fuzzibunz I got used, 3 I can't ID because I got them at a consignment shop and a Diaper Rite pocket dipe I got free with a purchase).  We will just  buy more as we need them because by then I will be limiting my use of sposies even more until we don't use them at all.  I hope I'm making sense here! :)

For me, I finally settled on Thirsties covers because of the awesome ratings and because so many people say they worked.  I, like you didn't want to try a bunch, only to find they didn't work.  I'm worried about my FB pockets because I hear a lot of people have leaks but oh well.  Hope you figure it out!  Good luck!

  • This is what I did:

From the Cotton Babies store, I bought 2 dz NB and 2 dz infant sized unbleached Indian PFs, 3 snappis, and 4 thirsties duo sz 1 covers.  I washed and prepped these before G was born.  This would have worked, except G leaked out of the covers because she was too small.  So I brought her into the CB store when she was about 2 weeks old, and we tried on all the covers to find a better fit.  Then we bought 2 NB bummis superbrite covers, and 2 xs thirsties covers, and another 6 NB PFs.  This worked out great.  I picked up 4 KLOs used for another $20, which were nice to have.  I got most of this super cheap during the CB store grand opening, so my costs can't really compare (I spent $60).

Some suggestions for you:  CB has re-love Tuesdays where they sell used diapers in store.  Also, keep in mind it is easy to buy a NB stash that is still cheaper than buying sposies.  Buying sposies for 2 months will be at least $150, and you can't reuse them with FC or re-sell them to buy bigger diapers.  We didn't really need fancier NB diapers because she was a pooping machine, and we changed her all.the.time., so PFs worked until she fit into smaller OS CDs.
