How the heck do you cut these nails??

I am terrified of cutting these tiny nails and with all good reason, tried to clip them today and cut a piece of the poor babe's finger so we both ended up in tears. Until now I was using a file which helped for maybe a day or two then he would have little cuts on his face again. I really don't want the poor guy to spend most of his time in mittens, help!! I feel like I gave birth to Edward Scissorhands over here, how do you keep these little blades in check??

  • I was just thinking the same thing this morning.  I try to file but they are like daggers lol.

  • Our nail clippers have a safety guard on them so you can't get too far back, protecting the finger and nail bed. DH clips his nails when he's asleep or eating since that's when he's most relaxed.

  • Hahaha- DD sliced me this morning so I have the same problem!  I'm terrified to cut them myself, she won't stop moving around!  My mom is coming for Christmas- think I can wait that long and have her do it?

  • I use a battery operated file I got at BRU...little man's nails grow like crazy so I have to do it a couple times a week, but it works really well...

  • it's best to do it while they're calm or sleeping. also it helps if you push their finger pad i guess it's called back a little bit before you clip the nail. i like filing, but it takes too long and i'm impatient. so i just clip them. i usually do one hand and then take a break and do the other hand later.

  •  I file them down. Just move back and forth straight across. DD doesn't care for it but I try to make it super quick after a diaper change. She already doesn't like the diaper change so I figure I'll piss her off in one fell swoop. lol

  • I use a tiny pair of scissors - when he is asleep.

    Good luck!

  • I cut them when he's sleeping, and I hold them upside-down.  This way, I don't catch his fingertip nearly as easily.  It's a little awkward at first, but it works really well for us.

  • I cut them while he's sleeping. But I have become a pro at cutting a wiggly hand. My toddler HATES her nails being cut and it's a fight every time. I've become very successful at cutting them quickly and efficiently without cutting her finger. I've actually never cut her finger at all, but I have cut DS's once... Sad

  • I know it sounds nuts, but I use my teeth while she is nursing, they come off so easy and she doesn't even notice. I tried the nail clippers once and nicked her, so I doubt I will have the gile to do that again anytime soon!

  • you are NOT alone!!!! ugghh!!! I tried once and about flipped out when I sliced a little bit of skin off her poor fingertip. For now she is in gowns with the the sleeves flipped over until I figure something out. Think I may try the nail file tip later!

  • I use the cuticle scissors.  They work great.  Also, try to do it when they are eating or playing and are completely focused on something else other than you touching their nails.

  • I know it's not the best route but I bite them while I'm feeding him.

  • After he awakes and I nurse him I lay him on the couch to stare at the fan. He gets super relaxed. Sometimes he will jerk here and there but I try to keep a good grip on his hand. After dealing with cutting my toddlers nail I consider him a breeze.

  • I do my LOs when he's sleeping and never had a problem. I was so terrified the first time I did them but now it's nothing. Good Luck!

  • I was nervous about trimming nails too but once I did it for the first time I wondered what I was so nervous about. I do it when he is calm and hold him in my lap facing away from me (so I am trimming his nails in the same position I trim my own). Then I put the clippers into place but I rock them back and forth against the nail before clipping. That way I can feel that there is no skin between the clippers and the nail. It also helps me to push the clippers in further to get a closer trim.
