A lot of the information I've been seeing lately encourages adoptive parents to network, advertize, blog, and use social media to try to find placements, all while working with an agency. This is a bit scary, but it sounds like this is what "everybody" does. In addition, I came across an article today that said we should consider contacting a whole host of placement services/agencies on top of working with our current agency.
Anyone have experience with any of the above-mentioned? Any advice? I was already thinking about doing a blog with photos that our agency could list on our profile, but this other stuff isn't anything that I had thought about.
Re: Advertising, blogs, etc?
Hi... that's the route we took when our traditional adoption organization didn't match us within the first 18 months. We grew restless and began looking for other options.
We worked with a group of facilitators and consultants that had low sign up fees. We also worked with a few agencies that didn't require money up front.
The pro's- It gets you out "there". More exposure.
The con's- The work involved. It felt like another job to me. Constatnly evaluating situations was actually depressing since you'd get your hopes up and then they'd feel crushed when a match didn't happen.
The one thing you need to do is research laws in your state to make sure it's legal to advertise and legal to work with consultants, should you decide to go this route.
PS- We started networking 18 months into our search. We brought home our baby girl1 at 22 months and baby girl two at 30 months.
lafayette,
I am new to the adoption research world and have found the similar information. It is like marketing yourself. In my state it is illegal to work with facilitators. We are only allowed to work with agencies or agency supported websites.
