Yogurt for yeast infections

DD is on antibiotics and while I have been giving her probiotics, she woke up screaming last night with pain.  She was a little red and there was a white discharge so I am thinking she has a yeast infection.  Bleary eyed, I did a little research and I thought I read that you put yogurt directly on the affected area , in addition to eating it.  Has anyone done this?  Does it work?  I would rather use yogurt than Monistat on her, but only if its truly effective.

Re: Yogurt for yeast infections

  • I'd call your pedi. I haven't had personal experience, but for a yeast infection I think they'd prescribe oral Diflucan.

  • DS has had a yeast infected diaper rash in the past where they prescribed some cream for.  Basically I just called the on call nurse and she called it right into the pharmacy.

  • ouch! I am not sure about yogurt, I'd call the pedi

I know in women, cranberry juice can help but not sure about toddlers

Cranberry juice is for UTIs. Yogurt/probiotics and adding vinegar to bathing water are home remedies for yeast infections.

  • For thrush (which is another type of yeast infection) I also read exposing the skin to sunlight (even indirectly through a window for I think10 minutes) will kill the bacteria...of course I realize that's pretty hard to do with the parts you're dealing with, but wanted to offer it up!

  • When DS had one we used Hydrocortizone cream three times a day.

This made me snort my drink.  Oh what the neighbors would think.

no kidding...that's what I thought when I read it as a recommendation for thrush on nipples...hmmmm, what window do I have where I can sun myself and not have neighbors peering in? none.
