Can you use Pull Ups for a regular diaper?

My SIL gave me a bunch of pull ups that her son no longer needs.  My DS is nowhere near potty training so a pull up doesn't make much sense right now...unless you can just use them in place of a regular diaper.  I mean, is there something special about a pull up other than it looks more like underwear because you pull them up?  Are they less absorbent?  More absorbent?  I'm clueless.  I just hate shelling out money for diapers when I've got these pull ups staring me in the face all the time.  What do you think?

  • Pullups are less absorbent, and depending on what kind they are, they will either feel wet or cool to him when he pees in them. I'd either save them until he is potty training or try one out now and see if it kick-starts the process.

  • Honestly, I would use them. I started when my daughter was about 2 years old (during the day mostly) because it meant that I didn't have to lay her down to change her. I could have her stand up. So much easier on the go. It did also help with potty training - because it allows them to feel wet. Within 6 months she was potty trained. Seeing as your son is almost 3 year old, I would give it a go.
  • We use them as real diapers, but we're also kind of potty training.

Just a warning, if you currently don't have trouble putting a diaper on your child, going to pull ups might change this. I loved going into pull ups because for the life of my I could not get my daughter to lie down and let me put her diaper on her anymore. Now, we don't have any problems since she can pull them up herself and will let me help her a lot of times.

  • I do.  I bought a bunch of Pampers Easy Ups on clearance for a lot cheaper than I normally pay for diapers.  I didn't have any problems with leaking.  DD prefers them because she can put them on herself.  They are annoying to change in public though because I have to take her pants all of the way off.
