J is getting hungry in between feedings but I'm not sure what to increase. Should I give him more oatmeal with his solids or more purees? His schedule is below...advice is welcome!
7am: 6oz bottle
10am: 4 oz bottle/2 tbsp oatmeal mixed with 2.5 oz puree
1pm: 6oz bottle
4pm: 4 oz bottle/2 tbsp oatmeal mixed with 2.5 oz puree
7pm: 6oz bottle
Re: How do I increase solids?
Don't do the solids at the same time as the bottles. I was told that solids meals should be given 1-2 hours after nursing/bottle. For example, we do:
9am: Nurse
10:30am: 4-6oz solids (oatmeal mixed with fruit puree and cottage cheese or yogurt)
1pm: Nurse
2:30pm: Baby food pouch (4.2oz) plus some puffs/melts
5pm: Nurse
6:30pm: 4-6oz solids (two-veggie puree mix plus cut up chicken or turkey)
8pm: Nurse
We're on your same 3-hour schedule from 7a to 7p, and we do the solids halfway between 2 bottles, so:
7am - 7 oz bottle
8:30am - 1 container solids
10am - 7 oz bottle
1p - 7 oz bottle
4p - 7 oz bottle
5:30p - 1 container solids
7p - 6 (or 7) oz bottle
I am having the same problem. DD gets her solids before bottles though at daycare (that's what they have always done and it seems to be working for her so I haven't messed with it). She was taking 5 - 5-6 oz bottles a day (typically 26 - 28 oz), and I have been trying to transition her to 4 - 7 oz bottles per day, but she still needs a few extra ounces at the end of the day (so she is taking about 30 - 32 oz now).
Up until this point though she is only taking 5-6 oz of solids (purees and cereal) spread over 3 meals a day. My Pedi had told he from 6 months on, formula intake will be pretty consistent.
Like you, I keep wondering whether I should be increasing her solids instead of bottles - so I sent an extra fruit and veggie purees for her breakfast and lunch today to see how she does (an ounce extra each).
