I'm due with DC2 in late March and almost certain that will be doing a RCS. The first time I had a c-section under general after a long labor (without an epi). The general had nothing to do with the emergency/direness of the situation Long story short, when I was doing the intake with the anesthesiologist it turned out that a medical condition I have ruled out an epidural for both a vaginal or c-section. (there is a possibility that I have asymptomatic spinal tumors; actually sounds scarier then it really is) but there was no way to know for sure in L&D without a very current MRI.
So basically, once I went into labor I knew that if things ended up with a C-section it would have to be general. After 18 hours of labor, and little progress I was exhausted and decided to go with the C-section.
Everything went really well, no complications for either of us, great AGPAR scores and I was able to hold DD almost immediately (well, probably within 5 minutes of waking up--I think this was about 15-20 minutes after DD was born. From what DH told me my ob was amazing and had to pull "rank" on some of the nurses).
I obviously would have preferred that things worked out differently (who wouldn't want a super-short/easy/vaginal delivery with no pain?) but really don't dwell on the negative.I also had an easy recovery from the csection, as a result I am fine going this route vs. VBAC.
That said, I would prefer to have a spinal/epidural this time around and will have an MRI about 5-6 weeks before due date (yes, have looked very closely into the safety of this and my doctors/family member who is a radiologist all said not any more impact for DC compared to u/s. Still if they find something I will have to do general again, so would love to hear from others who had to go this route. Please let me know how it was for you.
Thanks!
Re: Anyone have general A (for planned C)?
As far as a GA c/s goes I don't know there is anything you can really do to change how they go besides possibly requesting that the child goes to the father versus the nursery? Kind of the same way one may request to never have the child leave their side unless it is medically neccesary. I am not sure if this is even an option but it is the only thing that popped into my head where you may have some control.
I hope everything turns out positive for you and the MRI comes back clean!
RumbleLina: Thank you for your support and kind words; it probably will turn ok, just a little worried now. Yes, I really think it was that quick-based on DHs memory and the time stamp on the camera. I was certainly very emotional.
Kristine: There are so many reasons that I am most likely not going VBAC route, my C will likely be scheduled for the last possible time (39w5-6d) and if labor happens before then I will give a VBAC a shot. Not going 18 hours again, especially if there is no epidural.
This exactly. I was put under GA with my first c-section and it was 4 hours before I was with it enough and able to be moved to my room and hold my child. I have flashes of memory and according to my best friend that was with me, I would wake up and ask the same questions {and I was apparently a huge B---- to all the nurses when I would come to, oops}.
I have never heard of some one coming to so quickly. If I were you and you have to go the GA route, I would hope for the same exact results. lol
