Babies on the Brain

Am I missing something with the IUD success/failure rates?

I have Paragard, the non-hormonal, copper one. I have seen failures while on this board, but when looking up statistics on the interwebz I only see the .06% to 1% failure rate.

Anybody have any other information? Obviously their pamphlet has the less than 1% info on it so i'm just wondering if people saw other statistics or are just going off of what they've seen on the boards here...tia

In other news, I would swear I was ku'd sometimes and am almost half tempted to pick up a dollar store cheapy, but I think it's just phantom symptoms and side-effects from the IUD being in there. Hard when you're nursing and don't have a period to let you know things are on track. :P

  • It's just the bias of responders. It seems more common because more people are talking about it on a board for TTC. In real life, the statistics are what they provide.

It's like going to USC and asking "UCLA or USC?" Everyone will say USC because of where you are asking.

  • It's like any other BC, if you use it correctly, it works well. Many women get out of the habit of checking their strings, and then it's no longer placed correctly, so it quickly drops in it's efficacy.

  • I talked with my doctor today, and she said she believes the Mirena has a higher failure rate than they claim.  She's had multiple patients who've gotten pregnant while using the Mirena.  She said the Paragard is the opposite.  She's not ever had a single patient get pregnant on the Paragard.  (I've got the Paragard.  Whew!)

My doctor said the exact opposite. Literally.

Doctors don't run the experiments or trials. You cannot go by who comes in pregnant without assessing how many people are out there using it and not pregnant. It's a fallacy. What if she only placed 12 paraguards, but 1200 mirenas?

Oh, being married to a stats teacher.

  • I asked her about that.  Since she's only been prescribing/inserting the Mirena for the past two years, she's got a smaller testing pool.  She's been prescribing/inserting the copper-T IUDs for a decade...a decade and not a single pregnancy.  ETA: Anecdotal or not, that made me feel a lot better.  :)
  • I have used Mirena for four wonderful years. we decided it was time, removed it and are now expecting our first child.

I found these IUD's such a wonderful form of bc

  • I had merina for 3 1/2 years before we decided on trying for baby #2.  Ive had a chemical pregnancy and then a Miscarriage, I will never get it again, and I do believe these incidents are due to the Merina. :(

But I do have to say it was wonderful while I had it. never a problem till removal. it took 2 seperate doctors on two seperate appts, to find and remove it with threats of surgery.

Are the rates per use, per person, per year, or what? Because if you have sex a lot and it's "per use" (or per time having sex), wouldn't that mean if you were statistically average, you'd get pg every 100 times you had sex?  That can't be right!

per year I believe. So like 1% of people who use IUD perfectly will get pregnant each year.

Hopefully this link works, but it shows typical versus perfect success rates. IUDs are one of the best.

Can you explain why you think they're related? And I'm sorry for your losses

Yup, everyone who's had losses totally had them because of BC. Confused

  • Some women (like me) can't check for their strings because they are wrapped around their cervix. I rely on my yearly exam for placement checks. Sometimes I do get paranoid and make an appointment to get it checked though.
