Inexpensive hotels near National Harbor?

I have a couple of friends coming down this weekend to run in a race at the National Harbor.  We don't have the room to put them up here, so they're looking for a cheaper hotel somewhere nearby up there.  I honestly don't know anything about, well, anything north of Woodbridge.  Are there any towns near the National Harbor that might have decent hotels at good rates?  They're both teachers, so money is a bit tight.

  • I'm sure you could find something over in the Richmond Highway area of Alexandria. That is just across the bridge from National Harbor and it is kind of a suburban sprawl so things tend to be cheaper. I can't personally recommend any since I've never stayed over there.

This is what I was going to say - tell them to look in Alexandria, outside of Old Town, down south on Rte. 1.  May not be fancy, but will be more affordable.

Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.
  • I might even look in Old Town.  There are so many hotels in Old Town and the vicinity.
