Adoption

Home Study Scheduled

I heard back from our SW today & our home study is scheduled to happen in the next two weeks.  ACK!  I've searched through the FAQs & didn't see anything in regards to the home study.  Anything I need to prepare for other than interviews, smoke detectors, etc?  Hearing your experiences would be helpful for anyone that is willing to share.

I told DH his office is a fire hazard and would *never* pass the home study in order to get him to clean it up.  Wink

Re: Home Study Scheduled

  • Yippee!  This is great news.

We didn't do anything to prepare, other than a normal cleaning,  oh, I think we did stash some of our rather large booze collection.  It was a bit embarrassing, lol.

  • We cleaned EVERYTHING! I did get new smoke detectors and a fire exting. Although she didn't even look at those. She just did a quick look around the house. Mainly to see the rooms. I went WAY overboard. I did make dh hide his guns. We were living with my parents while we built our house in the middle of our homestudy. So, we did not have the gun safe in their house. Good luck!

  • That's funny!  I'm going to save that excuse for my husband's office!  We should be having our in home visit sometime this week, too.  Such an exciting time :)

  • So . . . hide the excess booze/artillery/porn/illegal drugs?  Okay!  :)  I plan on happening to have a bit of food prepared in case she's hungry.

samk & missred --- I got your emails and have been absolutely terrible at responding to anyone lately due to the excess insanity in my life.  I promise I'll be in touch!

  • It sounds like it is home study season!  There are a lot happening soon on this board, it seems.  We have ours December 13th.  Good luck to you, I am sure you will do fine!  We have a few projects to try to finish up beforehand.  We painted and took the stair rail to the basement off the wall and we haven't put that back up yet so we will be doing that.  Also, embarrassing as it is, we got a queen bed to replace our double and never got a bed frame for it.  We kept meaning to get a new bedroom set with the frame, but haven't gotten to that yet.  So our matress and box spring are sitting on the floor.  It is not unsafe, but it looks not so great so I will be at least getting a regular metal frame for now until we can get a full bedroom set.

  • You can always go college-style and prop that bed up on cinder blocks or milk crates.  A bed skirt would hide it!

We plan to take the dogs on a BIG walk beforehand so they don't act like idiots while the SW is here.  I know they'll think she's here to meet with them!

Good luck!!! So Exciting! I can't wait for our home study to get scheduled! Hopefully soon!  I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE what you said about your hubby's office - I am going to have to use that because my DH's office is awful! Definitly a door we keep shut. :P

Ha!  I guess we could do that...I think I will probably get the real frame though, just in case! :)

  • Good question!  I noticed there wasn't anything in the FAQ's about that the other day, too.

Our agency stressed that we didn't need to go on a cleaning frenzy and that they're not looking at that (of course we will, though).  She mentioned they'd be looking more at things like making sure there are fire extinguishers on each floor and a first aid kit that isn't expired.

I'm glad she mentioned that because neither of those things were on my radar but now I'm wondering what else I haven't thought of!

Our meeting was in the morning so I made some banana nut bread. I offered her some and something to drink, but she declined. It is good to have something just in case, but don't go over board.

  • You'll do fine!

I, just like everyone else, cleaned like a mad person the first time around.  It was totally unnecessary.  In fact, the messy office most likely won't even be a problem, although I never would have let the opportunity to "force" my husband clean up his mess escape!

Just be yourself, and remember, they are there to help you get approved.
