how many gifts do you buy LO for the holidays?

We don't do chritsmas gifts (it`s not the norm) but for Epiphany we get LO one big (not too big or expensive) gift and a medium or small one.

He gets more from other family members but that is it from us. He might get a few more small ones for Chanukka this year.

  • We usually set a price limit $100-$150 a kid or less if I get everything for cheaper.

We do the one big gift thing too.

  • we don't do a number of gifts, we do a money amount of $100.  If we buy more smaller gifts then she'll get more, but both this year & last year we ended up buying a larger gift that took up a large portion of her money so she'll end up with about 4 gifts, plus some random stocking stuff that was free.  Most years we won't really do a stocking stuffer though.

  • I did buy a lot for DS this year but mainly just small things.  I think CG already mentioned the $1 spot at Target, a lot of things came from there. I also bought some plastic golf clubs, jammies, a medical kit, blocks and a ball pit.
  • Wellll we still don't know 100% what we're getting him, but we'll probably spend about $100. Maybe one bigger thing and 2 smaller things, or something similar. And a couple books/small toys for his stocking.
  • 3 from "Santa," 1 from us, an ornament, and a stocking (which is also from "Santa")

  • For us it's not the # of gifts, but the amount of money spent on each child. This year we spent about $250 on each child. DD has 5 gifts, and DS has about 7. They get tons more from family and friends.

  • I don't really have a set amount. We usually do one or two big presents a year for E. This year it is a train set. I buy throughout the year and then let the ILs and my family that live out of town pick from the stash so they do not have to worry about shopping & shipping items. From what is not picked by family & friends, then I usually pick out 1 or 2 small things and put them in her Santa bag for Christmas morning.
  • We also have a $$$ budget. I think this year we agreed on 150-175 dollars for DD. Last year we only spent around 50. I've been getting a lot of good deals on the stuff I originally wanted for DD so we've only spent around 55 dollars so far.
  • $65- a shape puzzle thing, a baby doll and the fisher price zoo talker thing below. Not included in this is a kids table and chair set DH is building for her. He is handy and had wood leftover from another job. We will have to spend a small amount but not sure exactly how much at this point.

  • We don't have a set amount.  We wanted to buy him a toy kitchen this year, so that's his big gift from us.  I bought him a Melissa and Doug puzzle for St. Nick's, and I'll probably buy him something small for his Christmas stocking, but that's it.  The kitchen was expensive, and it comes with a ton of toy food, pots and pans, etc.  Plus my sister bought him Melissa and Doug toy food, and he'll get other things from the rest of my family.  And his birthday is in January, so we try not to go too crazy for Christmas knowing that in a month he'll have another round of gifts.

Edit: I forgot - we always buy a holiday book for him, so he'll get a Christmas book of some sort.  Maybe "The Polar Express"...I love that book.

  • We are probably doing one big thing (a table) and smaller things, like puzzles, a shape sorter and some stocking stuffers (keys, phone).  I gave my ILs and my parents ideas, so he will get plenty.  I do have to try to control myself.  I see so many things I think he would really like to play with.

I did get him a lawn mower that I got on Black Friday online, but I will wait until the weather is better here to give it to him for outside.

  • I didn't plan to get a lot, but he's getting a lot. A lot of it is used though.

    From Santa...

Radio Flyer wagon with canopy, $129 at Walmart, but they had it in the wrong place and honored the $74 price. I also had an $80 gift card from a gift he got for his birthday last year that we returned. I feel kind of bad using that for his Christmas, but eh.

A wooden desk I bought at a yard sale for $5 - I'm painting it white and putting his name on it

A wooden stool from a yard sale for $1 - also white with his name on it

Radio Flyer metal tricycle that I bought at a yard sale for $2 - it looks brand new

Hess Truck - we started that tradition last year and he will get one from Santa every year....probably until we die, lol.

    From us...

Wooden train set from Aldi for $19.99

2 die cast Thomas the Train, trains that were $6.99 at Aldi

Art Supplies, he loves to paint and draw

    Pajamas

New Christmas pajamas with his name embroidered on them

    New ornament

All in all we are probably spending around $100, but it's going to look like we spent around $300. I will get a few $1 books and little things/special snacks for his stocking. We are using our coffee table as an activity table for the train set. It has a lip around it and I'm having a thin piece of MDF cut to size to fit it. I'm going to paint it and put felt on the back so he doesn't damage the table. He's getting an InnoTab from my ILs.
  • Waay too many.  But I just can't stop myself.  I love buying him things and search for good deals.

That said, I spent the most money on clothes for him.  It's basically the rest of his winter wardrobe.

His "big gift" is a train set (which was only $30 - our family will buy him more accessories to go with it) and we've gotten him a few other small toys as well a a few books and puzzles.  I really want to buy him a PBK Anywhere Chair (as his Santa gift), but they're backordered right now... Sad

Great idea about the coffee table!

Thanks! We don't have room in our house for a train/activity table and I really don't want something that's going to clash with my decor, lol!
  • He's getting a play kitchen, learning carpet, FP talkers zoo, fun Cars straw sippy, Iplay peek a boo bag, and 6 books. So 1 large present, 2 basic ones and some stocking stuffers. It's definitely enough, considering the grandparents and 3 uncles will have more toys and clothes heading our way. As it is, we generally keep 1/2 of his stuff hidden the spare bedroom, and rotate the toys around every few weeks to avoid boredom and crazy clutter too.

ETA: we set a $150 limit for him. With the books, I went to $180. Oops.

  • A smart trike, a dora doll, a stuffed triceratops (because DH is a nerd), some puzzles, and some play food.
  • This content has been removed.
  • They are each getting a pair of Xmas jammies, and then 3-4 smallish gifts from us. They will get a lot of stuff from grandparents and aunts/uncles, so we never get them much. But now that DS1 is older, I find myself wanting to get more for him, sigh.

  • Too freaking many! I listed yesterday what all we have got him so far, I think I have spent about $300. I only need to pick up a few more things and he is done so probably a total of 6-8 gifts $330ish spent. My parents and inlaws on the other hand have gone crazy buying stuff too, $400 worth of toys from inlaws and I am not even sure what my parents have spent but its too much! My mom buys toys/clothes but then my dad just puts cash in his stocking for his savings account.

  • I know some years he will end up absolutely spoiled. Every year he will get jammies and a book for Christmas eve, a stocking and a big present (or 2 this year) from Santa and then whatever I can find in stores that I can afford. Buying most of his gifts locally in our small town is preventing spoilation this year. The 6 aunties and 5 granparents are another story.  We will donate a bunch of toys every Dec.

My mom  would go all out for us 5 girls. I caught her spirit of giving and wish I could spoil everyone in my life with gifts! The fact that I love shopping doesn't hurt.

    Zero.

He's 14 months old and we don't have an older sibling.  He's overflowing with toys and books.

Santa will come next year, when he has a general idea of what is going on.

Yep. We only gave DS2 a play tent for his first birthday bc he got so much stuff from relatives. Gifts are definitely pointless when they are little, pretty much!

  • She will get one big gift from Santa on Christmas morning - a doll in a doll cradle.

For Christmas Eve we didn't go overboard this year, she has so many toys already.  We got her some Playdoh sets, a stuffed Curious George (she loves that monkey!), some wood puzzles, PJs and some books.  My mom got her an Anywhere Chair, a FurReal Friend dog and the FP Little People Zoo.

  • We don't count or put an actual limit for the kids.  We know what we can spend and go with that.

With family members, we spend no more than $40.00 and have decreased who we buy for drastically.  It's about the kids and grandparents now.

  • We're doing 3 gifts this year. In the future I think it might be 4.  We also do a couple little things in stockings.  He will get new pajamas for our pajama night celebration in 2 weeks.
  • I can see balancing out # of presents vs the amount of money you spend and so on.  Likewise, I believe that siblings should have the same number of presents to open and be in about the same ballpark of money. (Not such an issue now, but when they are older)

I worry for moms giving so many now that they'll get in a habit that breaks the bank long term.  I hear everyone saying that we show love through gifts, and I get that.  Obviously, we want to do everything we can to avoid having our children disappointed. I worry we can buy so many gifts now, but as they get older we won't be able to do so because the gifts are more expensive.  I don't want a kiddo who says, um last year I got 10 presents and this year there's only 8... (insert Harry Potter spoiled cousin scene here)

Plus, I know I'm guilty of not having as much in savings as I should, and we're only getting LO 3 gifts.  I'm sure we could all benefit from cutting back a little and padding our savings a little. How come shopping is so fun and saving isn't!!? Stick out tongue

  • A "big gift" from DH and I (last year it was his jumper and this year it will be a play kitchen), a few books and some much needed pj's and undershirts. Do I want to give him everything he could ever hope for? Yes. Will I? No. Family is pretty good also, he wasn't given excessive amounts last year, they do well sticking to "he needs" instead of random trendy crap.

  • We typically spend close to $1000 on our kids so close to $200 each but the amount really varies by child but they get the same # of gifts. We do 1 Santa gift and stocking stuffers and then from us the kids get 4 gifts (a Need, a Read (or do activity), a Want and a Wear).

    DD(14),SD(13),SS(11),SS(9),DS(3)

  • We don't do a gift amount limit but we set a price limit. $100 seems to be the same number that keeps getting set for gifts so far (christmas, birthday, etc.).

  • We go by the number of gifts. We have a teenager and it is a lot more for her gifts than our 3 and 1 year old. And trust me they will count them someday to make sure they have the same number of gifts! For sure that is very important to kids!!
  • We bought him a toy shelf which we needed anyways, two puzzles, a ball tower thingy and we'll probably put some "guys" in his stocking - Sesame toy figures or something.  $100 max.  I'm not sure if I had more to spend that I'd buy more, I have 3 siblings and he has two sets of grandparents that like to spoil him.
