Suggestions for baby activities

Hi ladies,

I normally hang out on working moms board, but have a local question for you.  DS is 9.5 months and just starting to get really excited about other little kids and babies.  He spends all day alone with a nanny so I'm trying to figure out what we could do on the weekends that would allow him to play with other little ones.  He doesn't exactly "play" yet, obviously, more like crawls around and puts stuff in his mouth.  I hate to pay the prices for Gymboree right now because I feel like he's not getting much out of it at this age.  He's also a bit too young for story time and other structured activities.  We are taking the Fairfax County parks baby swimming class for three Saturdays in December.  I'd like to find some other activities like that with other little ones around.  Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Suggestions for baby activities

  • Most indoor activities for babies and toddlers are kind of structured, like those classes you mentioned. I took M to baby yoga and swimming a few times. Honestly, I think it was more beneficial to me (getting me out of the house and socializing) than for him, but we both had fun. You could also sign up for a class (gymboree, music, etc.) during the week and ask your nanny to take him, assuming you're comfortable with that.

  • There are infant/mommy (or daddy or nanny or grandma) classes through Ffx County.  There are also infant classes on Saturdays at Wolf Trap, though those cost about as much as the Gymboree-type stuff.
Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.
  • Some free ideas.

A playgroup.  Mine is with my friends who have all had children around the same time.  But I know you can find or start up others through your community newsletter, meet-up, religious institution etc.  My group takes turns hosting and meets once a month.

Tysons, Landmark and Fair Oaks have indoor play areas.  If you go on the earlier side, it's usually younger children.

Ikea, Pottery Barn Kids or any other stores that put out their toys for kids to play with are great.  On car trips we often stop at Ikea for lunch/dinner and free play time before continuing on our journeys.  The only downside is that is never "free" for me since I wind up buying more than I intend.

  • Some of the libraries near my house have either open areas in the kids' section where there are usually some kids hanging out, or even a little play structure for toddlers/preschoolers. It's a decent way for LOs to watch other kids while they do their own thing.  You might check out the libraries near you if you're open to less organized activity.

  • Playgroup would be my best suggestion. DD is in a daycare but I joined a local playgroup with babies all about the same age and they have a blast and us moms do too. I've made some good friends through my group. You can just invite people to your house, lay out some toys and there you go. I found my playgroup through Meetup.com.
