Clomid MoMs? WWYD?

Really looking for reassurance from MoMs that conceived twins then singleton on Clomid, but also welcome feedback from anyone else.

After trying for nearly a year our first go-round, my doctor prescribed Clomid. Boom, first cycle on 50mg, we got pregnant with twins.
Now we've been trying again. After 15 months and 1 miscarriage, my doctor prescribed the clomid again.

But I'm still on the fence if I want to take it yet. As much as we love our twins, and as fortunate as I was to have an "uneventful" pregnancy with them, I don't know if I'm quite ready to risk conceiving 2 again.

I think the biggest thing that's holding me back is the miscarriage. In the words of my doctor, that I was able to get pregnant that cycle shows that I can get pregnant without the clomid. But 1 in 15? How long do I keep trying without?

If it comes down to twins or nothing, we'd gladly take the twins again, but I'm just not sure if I'm ready to pull the trigger yet...

Re: Clomid MoMs? WWYD?

  • My first cycle of clomid + IUI I conceived my boys. I took 100 mg and had 3 follies. Now we're TTC #3 and we did a cycle of 50 mg + IUI (1 follie) and it was a BFN. I talked to the doctor and upped my dose and had an IUI last week with one mature follie and two smaller ones.

When I spoke to another doctor in the practice she said she would not recommend going down in the dose because my eggs are older now (I'm 34 and was 32 the first time around).

Are you being monitored? I wouldn't risk not knowing how many follicles I was producing. We know that each follicle can be a baby so we want to know and think about the risk.

If you're not ready, then hold off. You've conceived on your own and it could happen again.

    Yes
  • If by "monitoring" you mean ultrasound to see how many eggs are maturing (sorry if my terms are incorrect/inaccurate, my understanding of the process is informed but basic), no my doctor is not planning on having me come in, due to the success of my last attempt w/ the aid of the clomid.

But thank you for asking. That right there could be my answer. Funny how you don't think of the simplest, most obvious answers when your head is clouded with emotions.
I'll be calling my doctor this afternoon to ask if that would be an option.

Monitoring would definitely be recommended.  I had no success on my first two Clomid cycles (one at 50 mg, one at 100 mg) and just by circumstances we did another cycle of Clomid versus injects.  We did the monitoring and saw two mature follies, triggered and did the IUI after I had actually O'd, and managed to get pregnant with triplets.

I wouldn't do Clomid without monitoring because of the chance of cysts, and if you are concerned with multiples, I wouldn't do it without monitoring to make sure you are fully aware of what your chances are.

We have decided not to have any more because of the risks of multiples.  I had a horrible pregnancy and I can't imagine trying to do it with twins already here-and unless we do IVF we can't take the chance of it being twins again.  It's a hard decision-but I know I wouldn't go through without monitoring if we had decided.

    Good luck!

  • It took 150 mg of Clomid for me to get pregnant with the twins (closely monitored; 2 follies --> 2 babies). If we decide to try for more kids, we will definitely be closely monitoring things. As it stands, we probably wouldn't trigger if I had more than one mature or almost-mature follie. Unless we win the lottery before then so we could afford another set of twins. Wink

  • you need to be monitored by BW and US - period. Docs should NOT give out clomid without monitoring- sadly many OB's do.... go see an RE or make your OB monitor you - then you'll know how many eggs are about to come out - and can decide to go forward or not.

We got pg with my older son with our first cycle of clomid- with one follie/egg - so we knew any follies/eggs that we had in the future on clomid could = babies and would not have gone through with our IUI if we had 3 or more.  We had 2 follies the cycle we got our twins - so our hunch was right.

  • Definitely have them monitor you.  Especially if you are unsure about twins again... you could end up with more than that without monitoring.  Good luck!

  • I do agree with the rest of the posters that monitoring is your best bet to avoid multiples again.

However I do feel I need to present myself as a cautionary tale  :D

We conceived our twins on our first Clomid (100mg) + IUI cycle. We had an ultrasound (monitoring!) on about CD13, which showed one mature ripe follicle, and a few that were quite a bit behind/were not going to be ready. Doctor administered the trigger shot that day to release that mature egg, and we did our IUI the following morning.

When we went in several weeks later, after getting a bfp and having a couple betas drawn, we found two sacs and two fetal poles. Twins!

Our RE went over the chart and notes in detail trying to see what made sense to explain this (as they are fraternal) and his best guess is that the Clomid actually brought me two mature eggs, and I managed to release one on my own before I got the ultrasound and trigger. The trigger shot then pushed the second mature egg out (which may have happened anyway, we can't be sure) and voila, twins!

All I am saying is that monitoring CAN let something slide through too, unless they are monitoring prior to the expected "mature" stage. ;)

    good luck!!
